A man upset about losing his job shot a woman in the back as she was running away before fatally shooting himself Monday, police in Northampton County said.

Wilson Police responded after 1 p.m. for multiple reports of shots fired with injuries, borough police said in a news release.

Arriving officers found Roderick Bliss IV, 38, with gunshot injuries, and he was unresponsive and not breathing, police said. Officers also found a 43-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her back. The woman told police Bliss had shot her, police said.

The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where she underwent surgery. She is currently in ICU and is expected to survive, police said.

Northampton County Coroner Zach Lysek arrived on scene and later ruled Bliss’s death a suicide.

The woman, who said she was Bliss's longtime girlfriend, and others who police interviewed said Bliss had become increasingly upset over the COVID-19 pandemic in the days before the shooting.

Minutes before the shooting Bliss was extremely upset about the pandemic and the fact that he had recently lost his job, police said.

He went into the basement and came outside on to the rear porch with the woman. While holding the handgun, Bliss told the victim, “I already talked to God and I have to do this," police said.

The victim ran off of the porch, and Bliss shot at her four times, striking her once in the back. Bliss then shot himself, police said.

Here's his obituary. They seem to have forgotten to say he was doing the "Lord's" work, but they did say he loved his family.
Roderick T. Bliss IV (R.T.), 38, of Easton, entered into eternal rest Monday, March 30, 2020 at his home.
....
Always known to be a "hard worker", he was employed throughout the years by William G. Kleppinger and Son Concrete, recently experiencing job loss due to the current conditions in the country.

R.T. took great pride in his woodworking, making many gifts that he shared with family and friends. He was also known to dabble in cooking. He was an avid lover of the outdoors and was known to hook a fish or two with his Dad. R.T. loved his family more than anything.

Surviving along with his parents are a son Roderick T. Bliss V; ......

This is just heartbreaking to say the least! Too many folks begin to feel absolutely hopeless when it comes to losing their livelihoods, especially in the face of a worldwide crisis. I absolutely hate that so many are taking a very temporary problem and taking a course of action from which they will never be able to turn back.

Man, I hope when I die my obit doesn't say I'm a "hard worker". You have to read it with the exaggerated air quotes. Passive aggressive perfection.

Did he really love his family is the question?

While I can understand being so emotionally broken that you want to kill yourself killing someone else is a burden that the family you really love does not need to bear.

Hopefully the woman has healed and her life has not been destroyed.
