An Ohio animal shelter threw an adorable birthday party this week for a senior cat named Sammy turning 19, a day before the feline found his next loving home.

Staff at Cincinnati Animal CARE shared photos of the birthday bash on Tuesday, complete with streamers, birthday signs and Sammy dressed for the occasion in a sparkly blue hat.

"Recently, the staff at Kitty City learned that today is senior Sammy's 19th birthday! Naturally, we threw him a birthday party," the shelter wrote on its Facebook page. "Join us in wishing Sammy a happy birthday!"

Sammy’s previous owner went to live in an assisted living facility and he has been at the shelter since June 7. The staff described him as "just amazingly sweet," saying the cat would love "a nice, quiet home to live out his golden years." Sammy is extra special, as most indoor cats live on average 10 to 15 years, according to UC Davis Veterinary Medicine.

The only stipulation for whoever adopts the feline is that they’ll be required to keep the tradition going and throw him a 20th birthday on June 15, 2022, the shelter added on Facebook.

"He's very observant and likes to just sit and watch what's going on. When he's not people watching, he's usually taking a nice nap and would love to do that in your lap. He's a sweet, carefree guy," a representative said, noting that he has no notable health issues causing any immediate concern.

The organization added that after word spread of Sammy’s birthday bash, it received a number of applicants and he was officially adopted on Wednesday afternoon.

I was wondering if they loose hair with age like humans?!

What causes hair loss in cats? Feline fur loss may have fungal and parasitic causes, such as ringworm, mites or flea allergies. Food allergies are another possibility, as are metabolic conditions such as hyperthyroidism, the term for over-production of thyroid hormones.

Also possible he was really matted when they got him and they had to shave him real short in some areas to deal with it. He looks like a long haired little guy.

I'm guessing combination of him being a bit up in years and maybe not able to groom himself as well, and his prior owners also being up in years and maybe not able to manage it themselves.

Could also certainly be health related, no way for us to know I guess.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our beloved Sammy, just weeks after celebrating his 19th birthday, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Sammy passed peacefully in his little cat condo that he loved so much and was given to his adopter when he left the shelter.

While we never get enough time with our pets, we like to think Sammy had the best ending an animal can get. He got a birthday party, some fancy hats, became world famous, ate a big feast, and got the best adoptive home he could've asked for. We can't thank Bethany, Sammy's adopter, enough. She reached out to us about him before he became famous with his birthday party and was waiting outside hours before we opened to adopt him after he went viral. We like to think Sammy perked up in his final days so he could meet Bethany and find the perfect home to finally rest.

In Sammy's memory, we encourage the community to adopt a senior cat so they can all have the final days this special guy had. Farewell Sammy, we will never forget you.
