San Francisco Police have arrested 18-year-old Keonte Gathron for the brutal beating of Yik Oi Huang. The 88-year-old grandmother was beaten nearly to death at a park near her home earlier this month in Visitacion Valley, California.

On January 8th, police arrived at Yik Oi Huang’s house early in the morning on a 911 burglary call. They could not find the grandmother in the house. This prompted the cops and her family to look for her across the street at the park where she exercises every day. There, her son found her unconscious, unrecognizable, and choking on her blood. They rushed her to a hospital where doctors found she had a broken face, spine, ribs and hand. She was in a coma until just a couple of days ago.
Police believe that Keonte Gathron, after assaulting Yik Oi Huang, stole her keys to rob her house. As he was robbing the home a witness approached the scene which caused Gathron to flee, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Gathron left some gloves at the scene of the crime which investigators would use to retrieve DNA.
Eight days later, police said that Keonte Gathron carjacked a man at gunpoint just six blocks from where the assault took place. Police were able to match DNA left at the first crime scene to the carjacking.
Three days after that, Gathron allegedly robbed two teenage girls of their smartphones, even punching one in the face.
Police used those stolen phones to track Gathron down to his residence in San Francisco’s Sunnydale neighborhood. They found Gathron wearing the same clothes as the suspect in the assault, reports the SF Examiner. Gathron took off on foot but police were able to apprehend him after they found him hiding in a nearby vehicle.
Keonte Gathron is booked on 12 counts, including two counts of robbery, elder abuse, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
