Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced Friday murder charges against a Blue Springs man in connection with the killing of a woman in Northeast Kansas City.
Arel Dawkins, 36, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
According to court records, on Wednesday, Kansas City police were dispatched to a home. When officers arrived, they found a woman on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim was pregnant with Dawkins’ child, probable cause statement says
The victim has been identified as Braisen Cain, who was a teacher at the Academy for Integrated Arts in Kansas City.
Based on eyewitness testimony and surveillance footage, a man ran her over with his Ford F-150, then got out and shot her multiple times at close range while she was on the ground.
He walked toward the street, turned back and fired at her again, surveillance footage shows. After reloading his weapon, he returned and shot her again before driving away.
“The victim recently broke up with Arel and she was pregnant with Arel’s child,” the probable cause statement says.
The probable cause statement also claims that Dawkins confessed to Cain’s murder.
