Sharmika Hickles, 31, was charged Oct. 5 in Waukesha County Circuit Court with kidnapping and physical abuse of a child — both felonies — along with battery, disorderly conduct and three counts of bail jumping for allegedly committing a new crime while other cases are pending.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Aug. 28, the mother took a Waukesha Metro bus to the Kid’s Kingdom daycare center to drop off her 14-month-old son, as she’d done in the past.

When the mother got off the bus at the Manhattan Drive stop, a woman, later identified as Hickles, walked up to her and took her son, telling the mother that it was her child.

Hickles tried to walk away with the boy, which set off a chain of events, including the mother trying to get her son back, being assaulted by Hickles, eventually getting her son back and trying to avoid Hickles to prevent further assault, the complaint said.

When Hickles initially took the boy, the mother attempted to grab her son back, saying, “That’s my baby,” but was unsuccessful. At this point, Hickles had the boy under one arm and then started hitting the mother with the other, the victim told police.

The mother was yelling for help when two unknown women stopped in a car on Manhattan Drive and began yelling at Hickles. At this point, the mother was able to get the baby back.

While the women from the car and Hickles were yelling back and forth, the mother, her son again in her arms, ran across the street toward the daycare center

Hickles followed the mother, caught her, and began hitting her again, the complaint said.

Another woman then ran up to the mother, grabbed the boy and told the mother to run to the daycare center to call for help.

She did, but Hickles pursued her, caught her, started hitting her again and initially prevented her from opening the door of the center. The mother was eventually able to get inside, lock the door and get help.

Police arrived shortly thereafter, and the boy was returned to his mother.

The mother told police she has never met or seen Hickles before and believes the incident was a random act.

Other witnesses interviewed by police corroborated the mother’s account.

The boy had abrasions to his stomach and underneath his chin, both believed to have been caused by the altercation. His mother suffered abrasions to her neck. Neither required emergency medical treatment.

Hickles faces a total of seven charges, including kidnapping, which carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and up to a $100,000 fine.

Hickles is a repeat offender due to a 2015 Milwaukee County conviction of battery to a law enforcement officer, the charges collectively carry a potential of an additional 20 years in prison, bringing the maximum sentence, if convicted, to 69 years 3 months.

A cash bond of $30,000 has been set for Hickles.
