A 1-year-old child died Friday after being left in a car outside the father’s workplace in Mebane, North Carolina, police said, bringing the number of reported heat-related vehicle deaths of children this year to at least nine.

The child was unresponsive when officers arrived shortly before 12:30 p.m. at the manufacturing facility where the father worked about 23 miles northwest of Durham, police said. It’s unclear how long the child had been in the car. The temperature in the area about 1 p.m. was 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The death is being investigated and no charges have been filed, Mebane police said. Investigators were conferring with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Shortly before noon on Friday, police responded to a call for a cardiac arrest at Armacell, a manufacturing company.

"Upon arrival, CPR was being administered on an unresponsive 12-month-old," police said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. "Unfortunately, life saving measures were unsuccessful."

In the course of an investigation, police discovered the unidentified father worked at the company and allegedly left the child in the car.

"Investigators have not determined how long the child was in the vehicle," police stated.
