When a small plane made an emergency landing at Raleigh Durham International Airport on Friday, only one of its two pilots were on board.

That’s because one of the pilots either jumped or fell to his death while the plane was trying to get to the ground safely after losing its right wheel, according to federal authorities probing the mystery.

Police are trying to piece together why Charles Hew Crooks, 23, was not in the cockpit when the plane hit the runway. His body was found in the backyard of a home about 30 miles south of the airport in the town of Fuquay-Varina. Crooks did not have a parachute on, and authorities believe his body fell about 3,500 feet. Authorities are also unsure if he died before the fall.

“I believe this was a first for many of us that were working this incident today,” Wake County Emergency Management chief of operations Darshan Patel said of the death, according to WRAL. Both the Federal Aviation Authority and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Crooks’ co-pilot, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries and released later that day. The plane, which could seat up to 10 people, was badly damaged.

The victim’s father, Hew Crooks, told local media he has no idea what happened to his late son.

“We can’t process it right now, I don’t know,” he said.

“He pursued his private pilot license while he was in college. I think he got that when he was a sophomore,” Hew Crooks said. “He said a couple weeks ago, he wouldn’t trade places with anybody in the world. He loved where he was.”

“I can’t imagine what happened,” the dad said. “We’ll figure it out, I suppose.”

Spooky. This is a mystery on caliber with that of Natalie Wood's death. (Side note: I am awfully suspicious of that Robert Wagner fella.)

It always looks bad against the survivor when two people are alone with each other and one of them turns up dead, the other not. It does not mean that the survivor is guilty of something horrible by itself... but it is a pretty good implication of such, true or not.

In those situations, it is not "he said, she said". It is the word of a living person vs. someone who is dead: essentially, one person's word vs. any possible forensic evidence. I hope that foul play was not involved, but it is extremely random for someone who was an apparently skilled pilot to fall from a plane sans parachute and die.

That looks like a fairly older plane that would most likely not have a camera, that stuff is only required for commercial and some military planes.

FAA, NTSB have yet to interview surviving co-pilot about whether man fell or jumped from plane

Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board leaders told WRAL News they have yet to speak with the surviving co-pilot of a small plane that made an emergency landing last week at Raleigh-Durham International Airport after a man fell or jumped from it.

Charles Hew Crooks, 23, died July 29 and was one of two people on board the flight, which had only one person on it when it landed at RDU.

The FAA will lead the investigation into how Crooks, the co-pilot of the flight, managed to fall from the plane.

On Monday, the FAA issued a statement to WRAL News, saying it would interview the pilot as part of its investigation. However, the FAA said it does not discuss timelines.

Lot of good info. in this article. They have 40 minutes of audio of the pilot talking with ATC.

Air traffic controllers say co-pilot ‘jumped’ from plane

RALEIGH, N.C. — A 911 call from air traffic controllers suggests that a co-pilot may have jumped from a damaged plane before the other pilot made an emergency landing in North Carolina, according to a recording of the call that was released Tuesday.

Two unnamed Federal Aviation Administration employees can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher that the plane was heading to the airport. The pilot onboard had apparently told them that his co-pilot had “jumped out of the aircraft,” news outlets reported.

“We have a pilot that was inbound to the field,” a controller told the 911 dispatcher, according to WRAL. “His co-pilot jumped out of the aircraft. He made impact to the ground and here are the coordinates.”

The call lasted about 13 minutes, with the controllers stating several times that the co-pilot had jumped.

Oh, if it was cats, young Charlie would still be with us. Kids aren't awesome like cats lol.

Well, his plan didn't work, I guess. Cuz of the whole dead thing. Since it was a private plane, maybe they were both learning, but shouldn't SOMEONE have known what they were doing?

Do you remember the German Wings plane that went kamikaze in Alps?
I flew the same route with the same pilot one month before it happened. I'm serious.

It was a flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf. I was there with my former boyfriend and it was his first business class flight in years (rich bitch flew to Barcelona first class with different airline.but decided to "suffer" the lower class, however it was called with me on the way back). We broke up like few days after, he said it's because I drunk too much and was high all the time, but I'm pretty sure it was the curse of this depressed pilot xD

I also bought him the miniature of this plane for his birthday two months later but he didn't appreciate my gesture.

But they still only have the word of the other guy that he jumped, so I don't consider it "solved" by any stretch of the imagination.
I really hate playing the race card, but just like a week ago so black guy killed someone in self defense and was held on large bail and awaiting a trial, while this guy said his friend randomly forgot a parachute and no one gives a fuck?

Hopefully, there will be an investigation into the jumper's private life.

Was he in the midst of a breakup?

Did he have significant financial difficulties?

Did he suffer any other loss that would have pushed him over the edge?

Could this have been a Machiavellian plot on his part to get revenge on his fellow pilot?

More needs to be known about him personally.

Well, it has happened before. Several times.

Check out how Franz Reichelt met his end, not to mention the ground below.

I know my story may seem unlikely so I've tried to find any records online that could help me to prove it is real but conviniently, flight radar types of websites have no record of both my flight as well as the massacre flight ( I really appreciate German Wings' commitment to bury the case as if EVERYONE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT LOL).

Couldn't find any website that can search flights of particular pilot (maybe of you know any).

And I couldn't find the boarding pass or the ticket itself on my computer as I used to be to hot to pay for anything myself lol (not anymore)

Pilot ‘upset’ after botched landing attempt, may have vomited moments before fatal jump

The young co-pilot who mysteriously jumped from a small aircraft in North Carolina to his death last month was upset about damaging the plane in a botched landing attempt, officials revealed.

Charles Hews Crooks, 23, was “visibly upset” after the 1983 CASA C-212 Aviocar was forced to divert to another airport for an emergency landing, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report released Tuesday.

The pilot-in-command, who has not been named, told investigators that the pair was conducting skydiving runs on the afternoon of July 29. Crooks was flying an approach to Raeford West Airport when the aircraft “dropped” and the right main landing gear impacted the runway.

Pilot error or a microburst?

Death of North Carolina pilot who fell from plane mid-flight ruled an accident

The death of a young pilot who mysteriously fell out of a small aircraft in North Carolina in July had opened up a hatch to throw up when he accidentally plummeted to the ground, officials said.

Charles Hew Crooks, 23, had complained that he was feeling unwell before he fell on July 29 from a plane as it prepared to make an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. , according to his autopsy report obtained by WRAL.

The investigation into his deadly fall “concluded that the decedent had gone aft, likely to vomit from the open ramp, and accidentally fallen from the aircraft,” the autopsy said.

His death was ruled an accident.
