A Jefferson Parish grand jury has indicted Seth Redell, on a charge of second-degree murder for allegedly killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old son in 2016.

Authorities say Redell, 29, called police on the morning of April 24 to report the child, Hayden Umbenhower, was unresponsive.

Redell, who was was watching Umbenhower while his girlfriend was out of town, said the boy fell and hit his head near the back door of the house and was unconscious.

The child was transported to University Medical Center, where he died five days later.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said Redell's story changed several times, but that he told police he took Umbenhower to the shower after the fall and ran water over his head in an attempt to revive him. But hospital physicians determined Hayden had suffered subdural hematomas, brain swelling and retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes, which they said was consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Hayden was a hero for other children.
Hayden Axel Umbenhower was tragically and unexpectedly taken from us just 3 months shy of his 2nd birthday on April 29, 2016 at 2:00 pm.

Though his life was shortened by tragedy, the lives he touched far outnumber his short years on this Earth. In death, he saved the lives of 4 other children through organ donations. He saved their families from the heartbreak of his own family. In this way, he will live on through others

To know Hayden, was to know an amazing child. Whether playing peek-a-boo, helping with sweeping and trash hauling or playing with his tool toys, he was always smiling and his smile was contagious.

A Marrero man charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend's 21-month-old son was instead convicted on a lesser charge of negligent homicide following a five-day trial in Jefferson Parish last week.

Seth Redell, 33, was sentenced May 11 to five years in prison, the maximum sentence for negligent homicide, according to Jefferson Parish court records.
Redell had been charged with the second-degree murder of Hayden Umbenhower. The toddler died of blunt force trauma to the head on April 29, 2016, after spending five days in the hospital.

Authorities said that Hayden was the victim of shaken baby syndrome.
"[The verdict] was extremely disappointing because I felt there was more than enough evidence to find him guilty of this charge," Hayden's mother, Julienne Frederico, 26, said Tuesday.

But Redell's defense team hired two forensic pathologists, including Dr. Michael Baden, who testified that Hayden's injuries occurred as a result of a fall, attorney Jim Williams said.

Williams believes his client should have been found not guilty and said he intends to appeal the verdict.
Frederico left Hayden in Redell's care in the spring of 2016 while she took a trip out of town, according to authorities.
