Police are investigating after an unattended newborn was left on a porch at a home in New Bern.

The New Bern Police Department said that on Friday at 12:44 p.m., a resident called to report an unattended newborn child that appeared to have been discarded on a porch in the Craven Terrace community.

The baby, born within the last 24 hours, was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center for medical evaluation and is in good condition.

North Carolina has a safe haven law, there is no damn reason to just drop the baby off like that. In fact, its pretty fucking clear what to do and what NOT to do:
How to Safely Surrender Your Newborn
Do your best to make sure that the baby is healthy, warm and clean. Then find a responsible adult who will assist you with the surrender of your newborn.

Your best options for a Safe Surrender contact include:
  • Health care provider
  • Law enforcement officer
  • Social services worker
  • Emergency medical personnel
Do Not Leave the Baby Somewhere and Hope that Someone Will Find the Baby

Many states have Safe Haven laws. These designate places where a baby may be surrendered. North Carolina's law is different because it designates people, not places. Safe Surrender is not abandoning a baby on a doorstep. You must hand the baby over to a person.

The child now has a chance for a loving family.

So many are waiting and wanting to adopt an infant. It appears that going through the appropriate process of placing a child was a bridge too far for this individual who most likely was in a rush to get her Crack On.

I join my fellows here in being thankful this brand new little life and light survived.

They keep getting caught...so why do they abandon them knowing with forensic that it's just a matter of time that they will locate the asshole that ditched them like that. Lesson 1 drop them off at a fire station will result in no criminal charges and baby will be safe. Some people are sooo stupid.

Authorities say there will be no charges filed in the case of a mother who left her newborn baby girl at a New Bern public housing complex.

District Attorney Scott Thomas said the baby was left under the state’s “safe surrender” law. It says an infant up to seven days old can legally be left with a responsible adult.
Thomas said it turns out the mother left her daughter with someone she knew very well. He said the infant was in good physical condition and had no medical issues.

“The mother remained with the infant until the person took possession of the infant. At no time was the infant left alone, abandoned, or in danger. Nearby cameraS confirm that the infant was not alone at any time and was safely surrendered to a responsible adult.”
The name of the mother is not being released because of her age, but police say she is safe and has cooperated with their investigation.

The baby was turned over to the Department of Social Services.
