A Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputy was doing a routine check at St. Joe Self Storage Thursday night when he saw 22-year-old Jordan Vaughn and one of her children outside. He immediately called the storage facility owners to get access.
Inside was a grim sight.
"To sleep on couches in a storage unit -- now it's heating up -- there's no electricity in there -- no running water,” said Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding. “All they had was a small bottle of water, and some cookies -- not conducive for young children."
Before child protective services even came to get the children, the deputy on scene ran 22-year-old Jordan Vaughn's name only to find out she already had several warrants out for her arrest.
Another man was also in the unit, 42-year-old Chad Welker, who Vaughn claims she met just that night.
"The gentleman who was on scene with her -- he had an active felony warrant," Sheriff Wedding said. "He was arrested."
While Vaughn has been charged with neglect of a dependent among several other drug charges.
Vaughn says she was only spending a few hours there to escape an abusive ex. But police found drugs hidden in the bra.
"This is a classic example of people who are using narcotics trying to raise young children and it just doesn't mix," Sheriff Wedding said.
And encourages women who are in bad domestic situations to reach out for help.
