A Lakehurst woman has been charged in the death of her infant son in a "tragic accident" involving a motor vehicle, authorities said.
Wendy Castillo-Torres, 30, was charged with causing death while driving without a valid driver’s license in connection with a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Jackson on Saturday, resulting in the death of her infant son, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

At around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Jackson Police responded to Grawtown Road for a report of a child struck by a motor vehicle, Billhimer said. There officers found an unresponsive 10-month-old boy with serious injuries. He was taken to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation found that Castillo-Torres brought her 10-month-old son to the address on Grawtown Road, where she used a friend's garage to clean cars, the prosecutor said. The infant was positioned in a bouncer seat between two vehicles. After finishing the cleaning, Castillo-Torres got into one of the vehicles to move it, but instead of placing the vehicle in reverse, she placed the vehicle in drive, trapping the infant between the two vehicles.
Castillo-Torres immediately put the vehicle in reverse, and a companion called 911, Billhimer said.

Holy Cow, that poor baby, why would you put a small child between cars even if you didn't even intend to move one of them.

Seems people don't have the ability to think critically anymore. Just to be able to think far enough into the future to come up with probable unintended scenarios, to keep your child safe.

  • Castillo-Torres was cleaning cars at a friend's garage in Jackson Township.
  • She placed her infant son in a bouncer seat between two parked vehicles.
  • After cleaning, she got into one of the vehicles to move it, intending to put it in reverse.
  • However, she mistakenly put the car in drive, causing it to move forward and trap the infant between the two cars.
  • The child was severely injured and later died at a nearby hospital.
