The New Jersey family members who drowned in their backyard pool were trying to rescue an 8-year-old from deep water — but none of them could swim, law-enforcement sources said.

The tragic ordeal began when the child — identified by neighbors as Sacchi Patel — jumped into a 6- or 7-foot-deep section of the above-ground pool at the family’s recently purchased house in East Brunswick on Monday afternoon, the sources said.

An aunt who was watching the girl called for help, and the child’s 62-year-old grandfather, Bharat Patel, jumped in to try to save her, according to sources.

But Bharat struggled in the water because he didn’t know how to swim.

So the girl’s mother, 33-year-old Nisha Patel, then jumped in. But Nisha also didn’t know how to swim and struggled to save both her daughter and father-in-law before drowning, law-enforcement sources said.

The aunt who witnessed the ordeal was able to reach the young girl in the water, but not soon enough to save her life, NBC New York reported.

A neighbor who spoke with Bharat before the incident told NBC the family recently had the pool fixed up — and Monday may have been the first time they had used it.

Authorities had originally been investigating whether the trio had been electrocuted in the pool, but ruled that out Tuesday afternoon.

I do pool service as my full time job,its not really uncommon that people own pools and cant swim well or at all, alot of old well to do people that really want a pool for status, family gatherings or parties. But yes I do agree most should know how at least.I was pretty much forced to when very young and I think I turned out fine.

Yes,as nowadays it would be child endangerment.

Whoops well there you go, right there in shout. @Metalfan12396 called it.

ETA: Now, I wasn't taught to swim at quite that young an age, but... 30 years ago, this was an album cover, not a focus for moral outrage.

Just as tragic as it is Darwinian. It is certainly not wise to purchase a pool before learning to swim, unless if you have planned/are planning appointments thereto.

Uh, those pools are the same depth all over. There are swimming classes for adults and children. I don't really think it would be any harder as an adult, and, in fact, it's not hard at all once you learn to coordinate kicking and arm movements. It's best to begin in pretty shallow water, too, in order to gain confidence and lose that fear of going under water.

I had been teaching my son back in the day and we decided to go to Hurricane Harbor or whatever it was called. He was swimming in the wave pool like a fucking porpoise, and I was stunned to see what progress he had made! Akin to when I was picking him up at the lady's house who was watching him (and she had a son the same age), and there he was riding up and down the sidewalk on a bicycle with her kid as if he had been doing it for years. Kids are amazing!

Middlesex County prosecutors and police said Wednesday that electricity played no part in their deaths. They said that while the above-ground pool was mostly shallow at 3 1/2 feet deep, a portion of the pool was 7 feet deep and “It doesn't appear that the victims knew how to swim."

Neighbors said the family had recently moved into the home. Zillow showed that the property had been sold in April.

"This is a devastating day for our entire community. It is too early to determine exactly what happened," Police Chief Frank Losacco said in a statement.

The county medical examiner determined all three died of accidental drowning.

So, I know they say you can drown in 2" of water, but how in the hell can 2 adults drown in a pool that is only 7' deep in one area? Just grab the kid, and walk across the bottom of the pool until you get to the point where your head is above the water.

Of course, being 6'1" it's a little easier for me to get to that point, and honestly, a adult should still be able to even control a panicking 8yr old.

How the fuck do 3 people drown in a above ground pool? Those things usually aren't that deep. Shit the cosmic forces really had it out for these people.
It said it was at least 6 or 7 feet deep.. Why didn't they have her grab on to something? I learned to swim (dog paddle) quick.. My grandfather chunked me in deep water and laughed.. I am sure they would have gotten me out but as a kid I was sure I was going to swim or die!!
