Nakija Martin, 48, was arrested on July 29, about two weeks after first-responders found the child “cold to the touch” inside the woman’s apartment in Passaic, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Martin is charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and remains in custody, authorities said.
Police found the child unresponsive about 8:30 a.m. on July 15 in the home where the two lived on Aspen Place. The child was pronounced dead at the scene
Prosecutors said Martin on July 13 intended to kill her son, who had been diagnosed with autism, and attempted to take her own life. Two days later, she called police.
“Martin called 911, and in a calm, soft-spoken tone, stated twice that ‘my son is deceased,’” a detective wrote in the affidavit.
When Passaic police officers responded to the home, Martin told them “the last time she saw [her son] alive was two days ago,” the affidavit states.
When police asked Martin where she’d been for the past two days, she allegedly replied, “here,” in the apartment, according to police.
“I’m just tired,” Martin allegedly told investigators, according to the affidavit.
When asked how the child had died, Martin was unsure.
“Trying to think. Maybe it was pills. I mean I choked him. Something like that,” the affidavit states.
First-responders said the child’s body was cold, and that rigor mortis and lividity were present.
