The parents of a 3-month-old infant were arrested this week after the child died and the baby’s twin was found with severe injuries, according to the Cocoa Police Department.

Quentin Smith, 23, and Hannah Jones, 18, are facing aggravated child abuse charges.
Smith also faces charges of child neglect with great bodily injury and domestic battery. Jones also faces charges of child neglect with great bodily injury and failure to report an incident to law enforcement.

Cocoa police said additional charges are likely as they continue investigating.

Detectives began investigating the case, gathering evidence, and interviewing witnesses, leading to the arrest of both parents due to probable cause.
According to Cocoa police, the 911 call came in Thursday morning just before 11 a.m. for an unresponsive child at an apartment on North Fisk Boulevard.

“They were attempting in the home to do CPR, the patrol officers arrived took over attempts at CPR, not successful, they did not revie the child,” said Yvonne Martinez, the Cocoa Police Department’s public information officer.

The 3-month-old girl was pronounced dead later at the hospital while he sister was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where she is currently being treated.
“Once our officers arrived, they immediately recognized signs of possible abuse. And there were two, 3-month-old infants in the house, twins. Both of them had injuries,” Martinez said.

Also in the report, both parents claiming the other handled the babies roughly.

The father reportedly admitted to biting, shaking and yanking them.

Neither Jones nor Smith have a criminal history.

Detectives came to the residence and began investigating the circumstances of the child's death, as well as "severe injuries" to child's twin sibling, police said. The twin sibling had visible bruising on her face and had, and a "large bite imprint" near her buttocks area, according to an arrest affidavit.

Following interviews with multiple witnesses and the collection of physical evidence from the home, police arrested Smith and Jones.

In a post-Miranda interview with police, Jones said that she had gone to check on the twins after she and Smith took a shower and found one of them unresponsive on her stomach, the affidavit said. Regarding the children's injuries, she said both children constantly bang their heads against the lining of their bassinet. She also added that Smith used his hands to "squeeze together" the children's faces when feeding them, then changed her statement to say that he bites them.

Smith told police he had bitten the child multiple times, causing multiple bruises. He additionally told them that he was told by Jones and another individual to stop biting both children because of the injuries he caused, but that he refused to do so. He had not bitten the children in a week, he told police.

Regarding the deceased child's arm, Smith said he had woken up frustrated at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 29 and "yanked" the child by her shoulder to place her on a bed, the affidavit said. When asked about the bruising on her back, he said he "might have burped her too hard." He also said he had shaken her to get her to be quiet at least once a few months ago.

Smith also accused Jones of grabbing both children by the leg upside down multiple times in the past two months, "seemingly dangling the victims," the affidavit said.

Jones admitted to picking up the children by their legs "in a careless and reckless manner" while in the booking area of the Cocoa Police Department, the affidavit said.

I'm not even going to address the nonsense of 3mo babies banging their heads on their crib, did not happen. But what is with the biting of babies?? Kids do that when they can't express their anger any other way but grown ass adults, why do they do that??????

Aside from killing one child and damaging the other one severely, I'm seeing stat. rape charges here too. The gap is five years, not the two years normally granted by Romeo and Juliet laws (the widest allowable age range I've been able to find is four years, which is from my (and is NO surprise) stomping grounds of Georgia. I realize one dead and one seriously injured child are enough to deal with right now. But I hope there are charges for the stat. rape too! :shifty:

He refused to do so?

That statement rubs me in some type of way.

He refused to do so....

I was just finishing the math... Nine months in the womb, three months old, mom is 18 still...

Sounds sketchy to me.

Left hand twin looks a bit vacant, maybe an early sign?

Twin on the right is animated, responsive, and making direct eye contact. On the left, there is no expression, or reaction to whatever is making the other baby laugh, and her gaze is off.

1700067804360.png ~ @McDanel ~ The twin on the left quite possibly had fallen victim to serious head trauma injuries that we know damn well went untreated.

What precious bitties.

What malicious, murderous, miscreants.

I’ve wondered about that as well. Maybe because we’re grown ups and express ourselves in more adult ways, but biting? That’s just creepy. Reminds me of cannibalism…..

A Cocoa woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for enabling child abuse that killed one of her 3-month-old twin daughters and sent the other twin to the hospital.
Hannah Jones, 21, was arrested in October 2023. The twins’ father, Quentin Smith, was also arrested.

According to the state attorney’s office of the 16th Judicial Circuit, Jones said she say Smith squeeze, hit and throw objects at the babies out of frustration, and that he picked them up by their limbs. Smith admitted to shaking, yanking and biting the twins on multiple occasions.
Prosecutors say the couple never took the children to doctors for any reason.

Jones pleaded no contest in February and was convicted of two counts of neglect of a child with great bodily harm.
“These babies came home from the hospital and spent their entire 2-1/2 months there in an abusive environment,” Price said at Jones’ sentencing hearing on Thursday. “It’s only because one baby was found dead that morning that her sister lived.”
Smith is still awaiting trial in the Brevard County jail. He faces two counts of aggravated child abuse by willful torture.

The state attorney’s office says the surviving twin has recovered and now lives safely with a relative.
