Disgraced South Carolina attorney and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced Friday morning to two consecutive life terms for the grisly 2021 murders of his wife and son.

The once-prominent legal scion was stone-faced as he learned his fate at the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, just hours after the jury returned the guilty verdicts following less than three hours of deliberation.

It’s a new twist on an old axiom: A dog is a prosecutor’s best friend.

Bubba, a rambunctious yellow Labrador retriever, was not among more than 75 witnesses and nearly 800 pieces of evidence in the six-week murder trial of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh.

But the dog’s presence at the crime scene played a pivotal role in convicting the now-disbarred attorney — who was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for the murders of his wife, Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, in June 2021.

“Does Bubba have a sixth sense?” prosecutor John Meadors asked jurors, claiming the dog prompted Alex to give up his whereabouts. “Thank God for Bubba.”

Since Maggie and Paul’s deaths, Bubba reportedly lives with Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, a former housekeeper for the Murdaughs who was herself a witness during the trial.

A longtime Murdaugh family observer who has watched the trial also credited Bubba, said to be Maggie’s favorite of the family’s four dogs, for ultimately sinking the defendant.

“Bubba solved the case,” the source told The Post on Thursday. “Labs are very loyal. They love their owners and Maggie was Bubba’s master.”

Alex Murdaugh is being publicly portrayed as a "lawyer guy" and "white guy born in privilege" who, both individually and as a representative of a family with a staunch local and legal dynasty, let such go to his head and give him an attitude of untouchability, unaccountability, and a decadence toward decrepitude and corruption.

The circumstances surround the Murdaugh family has become quite the American story. So much power for over a century, and this is how it comes crashing down.

When it comes to people like Alex Murdaugh, he has done many terrible things. So adding a diarrhea story about him is an icing-on-the-cake type of story with the panache needed to make an already evil or unlikeable person even more mockable. Non-serious actor and highly documented douchebag Steven Seagal has his own attributed diarrhea story. An equivalent story for the likes of, say, Daniel Day-Lewis or Tony Iommi would not go over so well, considering how respected they are for what they have culturally contributed.

This is a picture that I saw of Murdaugh, which, by itself, looks like dirt on him. It is publicly available, and I got it from the Daily Beast article titled "‘Paranoid’ Murdaugh Drops a Bombshell on the Witness Stand".

He used to be a snot-nosed punkish rich kid. Now he's a snot-nosed convicted murderer and opioid-obsessed ratfink who will never be a lawyer again.

For which I have an apt song to decree onto this thread: "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull. While "Aqualung" was released about 52 years before the Murdaugh family TEOTWAWKI, lyrics such as, particularly, "Snot is running down his nose / Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes," and "Feeling like a dead duck / Spitting out pieces of his broken luck" seem quite appropriate ways to describe Alex Murdaugh.

Oh my friend, you greatly underestimate how funny I find any poop story; especially diarrhea. I would laugh in Daniel Day-Lewis’s face if he diarrhea’d his pants. My friend once sharted in a bar and was like “we gotta go” and I laughed so hard I pissed myself, so we definitely ended up leaving.

More trouble ahead for Alex Murdaugh: indicted on 22 federal counts for alleged financial schemes​

A federal grand jury has indicted disbarred South Carolina attorney and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh on 22 charges in connection with schemes aimed at stealing money from his clients, according to the US Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina.

The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering, the office said Wednesday in a news release.

Murdaugh, 54, "has been cooperating with the United States Attorneys' Office and federal agencies in their investigation of a broad range of activities," his attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, said Wednesday in a statement.

"We anticipate that the charges brought today will be quickly resolved without a trial," they said.

Alex Murdaugh’s college roommate admits helping to steal $4M from late housekeeper’s family​

The longtime friend and former college roommate of Alex Murdaugh pleaded guilty to helping the convicted killer steal more than $4 million in a wrongful death settlement meant for the estate of his late housekeeper who fell and died at Murdaugh’s home.

Cory Fleming, 54, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in federal court Thursday a day after Murdaugh was indicted on 22 financial fraud-related charges related to the insurance scheme following the 2018 death of the Murdaughs’ 57-year-old housekeeper Gloria Satterfield.

Murdaugh convinced Satterfield’s sons to sue him over her death in order to get wrongful death settlement money from the house insurance he had purchased just months before she tripped and died at the family’s South Carolina home.

Murdaugh then recruited Fleming, a personal injury attorney, to represent the Satterfield boys in the lawsuit and he won the family $4.3 million from the insurance company, according to an indictment.

But the grieving sons never saw any of the money.

The pair of lawyers instead pocketed all the money — split between the two of them — and lied that they hadn’t reached a settlement with insurers yet.

Satterfield’s sons later hired new attorneys and were awarded more than $7.5 million over the stolen settlement payments.

The brothers are still seeking the truth about their mother’s fatal fall as Murdaugh revealed he had lied about key details surrounding her death — including that his family’s dogs caused her to trip and fall — in court filings earlier this month. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating Satterfield’s death.

Attorneys for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh have issued a bombshell request for a new trial based on evidence that they claim shows a court clerk “tampered with the jury by advising them not to believe Murdaugh’s testimony” in order to cash in on the post-verdict media blitz.

Colleton County Clerk Rebecca Hill violated the disgraced former attorney’s “constitutional right to a fair and impartial jury” when she advised jurors during the six-week double murder trial “not to be ‘misled’” by evidence presented by the defense, the filing released Tuesday to the South Carolina Court of Appeals alleges.

Hill also warned jurors “not to be ‘fooled’” by Murdaugh’s own emotional testimony, reads the statement from Murdaugh’s lawyers, state Sen. Richard Harpootlian and defense star Jim Griffin.

When Murdaugh took the stand several weeks into the trial, Hill told the jurors to “look at his actions [and movements],” one juror claimed in an affidavit attached to the Tuesday filing.

“I understood [this] to mean that Mr. Murdaugh would lie when he testified,” the individual — who is identified simply as juror 630 — explained in the document.

Convicted killer Alex Murdaugh denied new trial after jury tampering allegations​

Convicted killer Alex Murdaugh was denied a new trial by a South Carolina judge on Monday after his defense team accused a court clerk of tampering with the jury.

Murdaugh’s lawyers claimed Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill swayed the jury by suggesting they watch Murdaugh’s actions and body language while he testified. But Judge Jean Toal ruled that the disgraced legal scion’s lawyers didn’t prove that the comments influenced whether they found him guilty of killing his wife and one of his sons.

The decision comes after a juror on the panel said under oath Monday that the clerk’s recommendations made him seem guilty and those comments contributed to her convicting Murdaugh.

“She made it seem like he was already guilty,” said the unnamed woman, who then replied in the affirmative when asked if Hill’s instructions had affected her guilty vote.

Hill is under investigation for allegedly trying to convince jurors to convict Murdaugh.

United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel handed down the sentence on April 1 at the United States District Courthouse in Charleston.

The nearly 56-year-old Murdaugh is currently serving a life sentence for the 2021 murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul. He was convicted of the murders in March 2023 and a motion for a new trial was denied this January.
