What started out as a drug investigation quickly turned into an animal abuse case after undercover detectives found a puppy with missing ears.

The Memphis Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit served a narcotics search warrant at Nakial Betts’ southwest Memphis home on Thursday.

While officers were searching the residence, Betts asked if they could bring his black and white puppy into the house. The small dog was reportedly wrapped in a towel and that’s when detectives realized his ears were missing.

Betts reportedly told them that he had sterilized a pair of scissors and then cut off the dog’s ears. He then put peroxide and Neosporin on the wound.

Betts was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

This makes me so sick and angry. Why can't people use their brains for once and try to understand the consequences of their actions? For starters - psychological trauma, cruel and unnecessary pain and discomfort, possible infection and worst of all hearing/communication problems for life.
If I didn't have a brain I'd cut his own damned ears off. If puppy doesn't need them he won't need his either. Jackass.

Had to make sure this wasn’t a repost of another story of the scumbag that cut off the ears of a dog and superglued them back on him somewhere. It isn’t. WTF?! Cut this bastard’s appendages off and superglue him to the other prick in the DD story that did the same thing. From head to toe.

I was thinking the same exact thing! I was like oh good they found the scum !? No wait it's a different person!? Wtf!!

Why? and Can they just cut his ears off ?

I'm guessing he wanted to dock the pitbull's ears. And he didn't want to pay a licensed veterinarian for the procedure. Dumbfuck here thought he could do it himself. Good for the puppy that this was discovered now. The puppy has a good shot at being adopted by properly screened and vetted individual. May this repugnant asshat never be allowed near any dogs again.

One of my boys got his doxed before I got him, (he was my drug dealing neighbors dog), I got him about a year before we moved to Texas, pisses me off every time I think of it. The main reason people do it is for fighting, hopefully this leads to something bigger getting shut down.

As for this fucker, I'd say lock him in a cage with a few hungry Bullies and watch the results.

He deserves to be found dead in an alley

No publicly available court records indicate that Nakial Betts was ever convicted or sentenced for the 2020 animal cruelty charge.
While Memphis police booked him into the Shelby County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, the final outcome of that specific case was not publicized by local media or the district attorney. [1, 2]
However, his broader criminal record shows a clear pattern of severe charges failing to result in major prison time:
  • The 2020 Arrest: Beyond the city summonses for pet licensing and vaccination violations, the felony animal abuse charge did not yield a reported sentence.
  • The 2023 Murder Case: When he was arrested again in July 2023 for a fatal shooting and kidnapping, prosecutors ultimately dismissed the murder charges due to a "lack of prosecution".
  • The Only Recent Sentence: The only confirmed jail time he received out of these high-profile arrests was the 30-day sentence (with time served) after pleading guilty to a minor methamphetamine possession charge that officers tacked on during his 2023 arrest.
