A Strawberry Plains mother has been charged with aggravated child abuse after she allegedly admitted to severely injuring her 11-month-old daughter.

Samantha Paige Roberts, 23, told detectives she “pushed (her daughter’s) head down into the floor several times until she went lifeless,” according to Detective Jim Huddleston.

Detectives learned about the incident Saturday, after getting a call from a local hospital, where the child was being treated.

Roberts was home alone with the child that day; her husband was at work, according to the warrant.

The sheriff’s office has filed a second charge of aggravated child abuse against Samantha Paige Roberts, 23, after finding evidence she had injured her 11-month-old daughter in an earlier incident.
She was first arrested Dec. 19 on a single count of aggravated child abuse, after she allegedly injured her child while they were home alone and then called 911 and her husband to say the child fell from a crib.

As officers were investigating that incident, they learned of a Nov. 11 incident when the child had suffered head trauma and a broken arm. Roberts admitted that she intentionally caused those injuries, according to authorities.

“Roberts stated she (injured the child) and then she placed the child back into her crib for the father to find,” according to the newest arrest warrant against her.

In the Dec. 19 incident, Roberts admitted to pushing the child’s head onto the floor “until she went lifeless,” then calling 911, according to the warrants.

Judge Jim Gass sentenced a Strawberry Plains woman to spend 15 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to trying to kill her own 11-month-old child in 2020.

Samantha Paige Roberts, 28, pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder and to aggravated child abuse, according to court records.
According to arrest warrants, Sevier County sheriff’s deputies were notified of the allegations by an area hospital that was treating the child on Dec. 19, 2020. Roberts was home alone with her daughter that day while her husband was at work.

The warrants indicated Roberts admitted to detectives that she had “pushed (her daughter’s) head down into the floor several times until she went lifeless.” She called for an ambulance and called her husband after that incident, saying at first that the child fell from its crib.

According to arrest warrants, she eventually admitted to causing those injuries as well.
“Roberts stated she (injured the child) and then she placed the child back into her crib for the father to find,” according to the warrants.
