(KUTV) The father of a 2-year-old child who was severely beaten over a potty-training incident, says this could have all been avoided.

Police say the boy's own mother, Jasmine Bridgeman, 23, and her boyfriend, Joshua Schoenenberger, 34, are to blame for what happened. Investigators believe the beatings have been going on for some time.

JJ was taken off life support early Monday morning as a result of being beaten, kicked, punched and dropped according to Layton Police.

Lyman says the beatings happened at a home in Layton where the couple was living. He says the latest incident happened on Friday during a potty-training incident.

According to jail documents, JJ pooped his diaper and the couple became furious, even taking the diaper off and smearing it in his face.

Documents say Schoenenberger continued to beat JJ while Bridgeman went outside and smoked a cigarette.

"The biological mother did allow significant amount of abuse to go on without intervening, but also engaged in it herself," said Lyman.

Police say the couple brought JJ to the Davis County hospital and reported he had almost drowned in the bathtub. Police say it was clear that's not what happened. He had internal bleeding, bruising to his legs, groin, arms and head.

His grandmother says she saw JJ at the store with his mom last month with a big bruise on his face.

"He had a bruise on his cheek a pretty big one," said Krista Sieger.

Krista says she called Layton police to report it and the father says he called the Department of Child and Family Services, but nothing ever came of it.

"We could have stopped this whole thing," said Krista.

"Very upset we have been trying for a long time to get those kids out of that situation," said James.

Lyman says according to their records they did get a call from the grandmother on April 16, but he says they tried to get back to her and make contact but were unable to do so. He says the issue was brought up to the Department of Child and Family Services but the mother's whereabouts could not be found. No one knew where she was?

James Sieger says he was living with Bridgeman in Georgia four months ago and she suddenly just vanished with JJ and their 5-month-old child. He did not know where she was at until his mother spotted them in the store in Utah.

Schoenenberger and Bridgeman are both at the Davis County Jail and are expected to be charged with homicide.

Damn it, how I wish she had grabbed that boy and punched the cum-dumpster in her meth-mited face. Just taken him and ran, after beating the so-called mother within an inch of her pathetic life.

Just want to add, I'm not blaming her for not taking the boy, rather simply expressing that I wished she had.
 
The selfishness it takes to know that you're an addict and unable to raise your kids without violence, yet keep them anyway is mind blowing to me. I would rather an addicted parent leave the child, even alone is better than this..at least they have a chance to be found and live.

And the poor Dad...I have such sympathy for him. For his baby to just disappear and then turn up bruised, and no one would help him get his baby back. I don't even have the words. I can only hope this poor baby knew it wasn't his fault that this was happening to him.

As to the ones who did this there is no punishment, including a slow death, that would be sufficient. RIP Sweetness.

I'm too heartbroken to be mad. It's just so damn sad. God I love chunky little guys and he looked so sweet. I bet he was more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
Monsters like this belong in jail. I want them to suffer a living death but some bleeding heart asshole won't let that happen. As if anyone really gives a fuck if they spend 23hrs a day in a cell by themselves. I don't. But short of killing them when all is said and done it's the option I'd choose.
 
What a beautiful little guy. I'm so sad to see this pic of him.....his head and face so terribly swollen. I hope the mom and step dad die slow torturous deaths. It ticks me off when people punish kids for having accidents in their diaper/pants. Not all kids potty train at the same rate. Boys generally train later than girls. He was killed because of a bodily function he didn't have any control over. Unfathomable for me.

God, the lives they destroyed. The grandmother will never be right, wondering what she could've done differently, and the dad... I can't even begin to imagine his pain. Fugly cunt, that's not a mother, it's a monster. Hope they both kill themselves, they don't deserve to live the 20 years it would take to give them the DP.

Attorney Ronald Fujino asked for probation Monday, saying she wasn't accused of murder and doesn't have a criminal record.

But Judge John Morris said her actions were abhorrent and reprehensible in the case he called heartbreaking. "Essentially, what I must conclude is you chose your boyfriend over your child's welfare," he said.

A calm Bridgeman responded to his pronouncement of the sentence by saying, "Thank you."

Her boyfriend, meanwhile, pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and child abuse in a separate court appearance on Monday. His case carries the possibility of the death penalty, though prosecutors haven't said if they'll seek capital punishment. Schoenenberger is due back in court on May 9.

I think society should be split into two categories... Those who find beating a child acceptable and those who don't, because there is obviously something fundamentally not right about anyone who would participate in, or allow, such abuse of the most innocent members of our society.

Take the child beating group, sterilize them, and ship them all off to an island where they can sustain themselves, but will never be capable of harming a child ever again.

Added bonus: they all get each other as company. :D

I agree, his sweet face is horribly swollen and it just adds to the sobering reality of what he went thru. As I've said many times before, it takes an entirely different species of human to be capable of such cruelty.

The only bright spot in this story is that he'll never be at the mercy of these monsters again.

A woman convicted of lying to police after her boyfriend allegedly beat her 2-year-old son to death over potty training will serve at least four years in prison.

Jasmine Bridgeman, 24, of Layton will have her first parole hearing in May 2020, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole decided. The board members will consider then whether she should be released or serve out the rest of her sentence, which could last up to 15 years.

Bridgeman pleaded guilty to an obstruction of justice charge in the death of James "JJ" Sieger Jr. At her April sentencing, she said she was truly sorry and would continue to carry the guilt and shame of his death.

Bridgeman gave police several different stories about how the boy got hurt in May 2015, once saying he was left alone in the tub and later saying she heard the beating from the other side of the bathroom door but her boyfriend asked her to lie, according to authorities. That made it harder for law enforcement to piece together what happened, prosecutors said.

Bridgeman refused a plea deal in the case last year and pleaded guilty as charged. Her lawyer had asked for probation, saying she wasn't accused of killing the boy and didn't have a criminal record.

But Judge John Morris gave her prison time, calling the case heartbreaking and saying she chose her boyfriend over her child's welfare.

The toddler's relatives have said they asked her to leave the boy behind with his father's family when she left Georgia, but she refused.

The boy died after Joshua Schoenenberger got angry when the child used his diaper instead of the toilet and stomped on his stomach during a beating, police said. The couple took the child to a hospital where he died of internal injuries.

Schoenenberger has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges.

I just had my first run in trying to report a serious concern to DCFS here and I understand now why everyone says they're useless. Obvious shit going on right in front of everyone's faces and they say there is no evidence there is anything to be concerned about.

Also, poor baby pooped his diaper. That's what they're fucking for. Potty training doesn't happen overnight, you condition your kid to crap their pants for two or three years then expect them to magically transition to the toilet overnight. Doesn't work like that. Nasty people. And she gets four to fifteen. You know she won't do the whole 15, plenty of time to get out and birth some more targets.

The trial for a Layton man accused of beating a 2-year-old to death in 2015 has been rescheduled.

Joshua Scott Schoenenberger, 36, will go before a jury Sept. 20-22 in Farmington’s 2nd District Court. His trial was originally scheduled for March 9, but was pushed back the request of his attorney, Edward Bass. Bass needed more time to prepare for trial and to retain a new medical expert witness, according to court documents.

Schoenenberger is charged with one count of aggravated murder, a first-degree felony; and a one count of child abuse, a second-degree felony, in the 2015 death of JJ Sieger. Schoenenberger has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Sieger was taken to Davis Hospital and Medical Center in the early morning hours of May 9, 2015. The boy was later flown to Primary Children’s Medical Center, where he died on May 11, 2015, after being taken off of life support, officials said.

Schoenenberger allegedly beat the boy because he soiled his diaper.

His next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 3. He is being held without bail in Davis County Jail.

A jury on Friday found a Layton man guilty of murder three years after he fatally beat his girlfriend's 2-year-old son out of rage over potty training.

Joshua Schoenenberger, 37, did not show emotion as a court clerk read the verdict and bailiffs rushed to handcuff him. Members of his family gathered outside the courtroom, crying and wide-eyed. A few feet away, relatives of the toddler, JJ Sieger Jr., shed tears of relief.

A jury of six men and three women determined Schoenenberger is guilty of aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, after about two hours of deliberation Friday afternoon in Farmington's 2nd District Court.

Prosecutors told jurors earlier Friday that Schoenenberger admitted to police that he squeezed the boy and stepped on him after the child laughed and urinated while in his arms in May 2015. They argued he knew at the time that the force he used was enough to potentially kill the toddler.

"Who had motive? Who was the person that was angry at JJ that night?" deputy Davis County attorney Susan Hunt asked during closing arguments Friday.

Prosecutors on Friday portrayed Schoenenberger as increasingly frustrated with JJ in 2015 because the boy ripped out blinds in their home, drew in magic marker on the walls, defecated in his room and would go to the bathroom in his diaper right after sitting on the toilet for 45 minutes during potty training.

"The defendant was enraged at JJ Sieger because JJ Sieger was being a typical 2-year-old," Hunt said.

On May 9, 2015, as JJ, who was potty training, soiled his diaper, Schoenenberger held feces in the boy's face, then took him to a bathroom to wash off, Hunt argued. As he held JJ out at eye level, the boy urinated and defecated, and Schoenenberger squeezed him before dropping him onto the tile floor and stepping on him.

He told police he slipped in the tub and "squashed" the boy, but didn't mean to apply that much pressure or hurt him, according to a video shown in court laced with expletives from both Schoenenberger and officers.

A Utah law allows capital punishment as a potential sentence in cases where a child's death results from abuse, but prosecutors two years ago said they would not to seek the death penalty for Schoenenberger.

A Utah man convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Standard-Examiner reports 38-year-old Joshua Scott Schoenenberger was sentenced after a jury found him guilty in October of first-degree aggravated murder for the death of JJ Sieger.

The former chief medical examiner told the court that the 2015 autopsy found several blunt force injuries to the child’s abdomen, head, torso and extremities as well as internal injuries.

Deputy Davis County Attorney Nathan Lyon told the court that the injuries amounted to a “bar fight between a grown man and defenseless toddler.”
