Marion police Monday arrested the father of an infant who died last April of multiple head injuries that an autopsy determined was a homicide.

Samuel Goodwin, 22, was arrested in connection with first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death.

The investigation started after a medical call on April 4. Police and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of an infant who was not responsive and not breathing.

Attempts to save the baby were unsuccessful, police said. An autopsy concluded the cause of death was multiple head injuries, and the manner of death was homicide.

During the investigation, police said Goodwin admitted he was the only adult who cared for his son during the overnight hours of April 3 through April 4. Goodwin told police the baby wouldn’t stop crying and wouldn’t take a bottle.

Goodwin told police he became “flustered and irritated” with the baby. After interviews with Goodwin, police said he also acknowledged he was responsible for the baby’s death.

oh Dear! That photo of him, he just looks so put out! Flustered and very easily irritated! The wee lad certainly got the absolute worst of him! Hope he spends the next rest of his life locked up and that he has a perfectly miserable time!? He should have to hear little Elijah’s cry 24/7! Too bad he couldn’t take the time to comfort the wee babe, things would have gone so differently

Sentencing has been delayed for a Cedar Rapids man who took a plea deal in the death of his infant son.

Samuel Goodwin, 24, was originally charged with first degree murder and child endangerment after he admitted he was responsible for his infant son's death after slamming his head into the ground twice.

He was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, February 2nd, but that's now been pushed back to June 21st.

Goodwin had planned to claim insanity or diminished capacity before taking the plea deal in November, pleading guilty to a charge of child endangerment resulting in death.

Now that he's facing up to 50 years in prison, Goodwin's defense says they need more time to get the psychological evaluation required in these circumstances under Iowa law.

The evaluation is needed to determine how long Goodwin should be in prison, but they're having a hard time getting it scheduled due to a lack of available professionals and limited availability.
