A minor league baseball player’s wife, son and mother-in-law were allegedly murdered Tuesday by his brother-in-law in their rural Virginia hometown, according to reports.

Deputies found the body of a woman in a driveway and the bodies of another woman and a child inside the home in Keeling, Va., prompting a three-hour manhunt for the alleged killer, USA Today reported. The player was reportedly Tampa Bay Rays minor leaguer Blake Bivens.

An unarmed and naked Matthew Bernard, who is Bivens’ wife’s brother, was found running through the woods just after noon, the Danville Register & Bee reported. The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identities or the causes of death for the three victims. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the Virginia triple homicide was connected to Bivens. The Tampa Bay Rays later released a statement that Bivens “suffered a terrible family tragedy in southern Virginia.”

The tragic case unfolded on Tuesday morning at about 8am, when a neighbor saw a body in the driveway of a home on Keeling Drive in Pittsylvania, Virginia.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, and found two additional bodies inside the home. Bernard was immediately named as a suspect, and police issued a public alert to be on the lookout for the teenager. 'He is armed with a rifle and considered very dangerous,' the alert stated. Within hours, Bernard was spotted running in the area, fully nude.

The police pursuit unfolded right in front of news cameras that had staged in the area.

According to WSLS-TV, the family’s dog was also shot and killed. Matthew Bernard’s father, Nelson Bernard, was not killed, but the suspect’s uncle told the news station that Nelson Bernard was home at the time of the murders.

So he killed his mother, his sister, his infant nephew and the family dog, but not his father, even though he was at home. That seems very odd.

We know he killed people, not some minor beef, he was running from the cops, yet no one shot him in the back, or face.

ETA: drugs + psychotic break is my guess. Betting he was living there because he was "troubled" to begin with.

I wouldnt reeeally consider what he did as running from the cops. They were setting up a command post/media staging area when he ran at them buck naked. He came to them. Hard to shoot someone whos three stooging it up. It's not like he was a threat at that point. The only "gun" he was packing at that point was an itty bitty skin flute. Even the K9 was weirded out enough to run from him lol

I read that his relatives are saying he was a “really good boy,” really Christian, like, attending-church-three-times-a-week Christian, but that he was also mentally ill. He apparently told his mom not that long ago that he was having “bad dreams.”

I’m wondering if his family didn’t realize how seriously ill he was, or if low-level mental illness exploded into psychosis overnight (he is the prime age for developing schizophrenia), with or without drugs? Maybe he decided to self-medicate his deteriorating mental illness with drugs?

Maybe the sister was moms favorite.
And dad was the only one good to him.

Or, he knew if dad lived it would be more painful than dying.

Look at me, trying to make sense of a senseless act.

I shouldn't be laughing, murder of an infant and all, but gaaawd damn its impossible not to laugh. The video of him chasing the cop while the cop maces him had me almost in tears.

Ditto. This is a horrific tragedy—just incomprehensible—but I’d be lying if I said that Yakery Sax never played in my head while watching that chase video.

That being said, my heart breaks for Blake Bivens and his father-In-law.

I found these. I couldn’t find one of the poor doggo though. I searched Blake Bivens on Instagram, like the stalker I am, and found a little bichon-shitzu type dog... but I’m not sure.

Also here’s another angle for all you who felt bad for poor green shirt man... he was very not happy with the situation.

Also, the more that I read on this story the sadder it is. It seems it was a psychotic break after all. No word on any drugs yet.

Edit- sorry I forgot the link. This one is an updated version now they found a sledge hammer...

From @Ducky .

They can say mental illness all they want but I'm leaning towards drugs. Until a drug screen comes back clean.

You could totally be right. That’s what I was thinking in the beginning too.
But... I also feel like the brain is pretty crazy in what it can do. Maybe wherever he went in his psychosis he didn’t feel any pain.

But yes, we will see how this plays out.

I want to say too I hope it’s drugs. It’s soooooo amazingly scary what the brain is capable of, and to find that he just snapped and did this, and was sober to boot... that’s just scary shit for real.
