An Alabama father is behind bars after his 13-month-old son was found dead after being left in a hot car for an extended period of time.
Logan Keith Chewning, 30, is charged with manslaughter, the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit announced late Wednesday.
TVCU Capt. Jack Kennedy said the discovery was made when the child’s grandmother could not get in touch with Chewning and went to the family’s home to check on them.
The child’s mother was at work, which is why the child was in the sole care of Chewning all day.
The grandmother found the boy dead in a vehicle, still strapped in his car seat.
“The father admitted to drinking at different times throughout the day and leaving the residence at one time to purchase more alcohol,” Kennedy said. “At some point, he left with his child and did not bring his child back inside.”
“The father reported that he believed that the child had been sleeping in its crib and must have accidentally been left behind in the vehicle,” he said.
Kennedy said the investigation showed the boy was in the vehicle for an extended amount of time - at least several hours. Temperatures reached into the mid-90s on Wednesday afternoon.
“The vehicle was in full sun,” Kennedy said.
