Kishawn Porter, 23, was arrested after paramedics were called to an apartment in Mesa, Arizona, for a child in medical distress. The 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. At the hospital, doctors say they observed suspicious bruising on the boy and contacted police, which triggered a homicide investigation.
At Porter's initial court appearance, a prosecutor said Porter punched and hit the victim multiple times with his hands and/or a sandal. Forensic experts also found the boy had healing rib fractures, pointing to a pattern of ongoing abuse.

While Porter is currently facing one murder charge, more charges may be coming. Detectives said Porter also abused his 1-year-old son by spanking him, hitting him in the mouth and slapping his torso and rib cage, but formal charges haven't been submitted at this time.

Authorities said that while Porter is a professional fighter, bruising found across his knuckles did not come from training or competition, but rather from fatal child abuse.
“Mr. Porter hit and punched the 2-year-old victim multiple times with either his hands and/or a sandal,” a prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said during Porter’s initial court appearance.

During Porter’s court appearance, prosecutors outlined a violent juvenile history, telling the judge Porter has prior adjudications for child molestation and aggravated assault involving a restrained victim.
An autopsy conducted Wednesday by the Maricopa County medical examiner revealed catastrophic internal trauma on the child that included healing and acute rib fractures, a lacerated liver and a lacerated stomach, with blood found pooling in the abdomen.

“It takes a substantial amount of force to lacerate the stomach, and the injuries were all consistent with child abuse,” court records stated. “Based on the injuries, no one could have survived the severity.”
Forensic experts noted that the child’s healing rib fractures pointed to a pattern of ongoing violence in the home rather than an isolated incident.
“That means this wasn’t the only attack,” Dr. Roy Lubit, a forensic psychiatrist who specializes in child abuse cases, said. “The idea of beating and killing an infant indicates an almost basic lack of humanity. An individual who would do the acts that are alleged would almost be overwhelmingly likely to be a psychopath.”
