First, a question, am I the only on that reads this as "Kevin Costner thought he was bullet proof"? Every time I see it that's what my brain sees.

Second, @Craygor - I noticed the Night Stalker t-shirt. My ex is an Airborne Ranger. ;)

Lastly, I've said this before and I will continue to say it, my oldest (of the immediate siblings) brother is mentally ill. If he gets himself into a situation like this, sad as that would be, I wouldn't be blaming the police. They want to go home and see their SO's and kids after work just like we do. There's FAR too much finger pointing these days imo...

I was kinda thinking maybe a diabetic hypo (or) hyperglycemia event.
Starts off while he was driving (would explain the erratic driving and accidents).
Something in his brain gets cross wired and instead of acting rational he immediately goes to rage mode...

YMMV. I'm sure they'll announce something after the postmortem.
When it's low you go into coma and have serious lack of coordination and speech.. and your memory of anything is wiped out until things are restored..

I genuinely don't understand this thread. We have everything from, "poor guy musta been mentally ill, so sad" to "musta been on drugs" to "military vet who just couldn't handle life anymore" to "blood sugar musta been outta wack, of course that's why he attacked a cop!".

My mind is blown at the excuse making for this shithead. I don't recall such mental gymnastics to excuse/explain away a criminal actl ike this in damn near any other story. Methinks we have a case of "older white male = can't simply be a scumbag piece of shit criminal! GOTTA be some other explanation here!!!" Don't get absurd discussions on this forum in any crime story involving a black dude trying to hurt a cop. Seriously, why are so many so hellbent on finding some scapegoat/explanation for this mans actions other then simply saying/accepting "this dude was a fucking piece of shit criminal out to hurt some people".

My mind is blown by the idiocy on display here

What was in the video gave every appearance of that man being a classic "madman".

This same behavior also defines someone who is a classic "scumbag criminal". Plenty of people get so angry and hate-filled at society, at police, that they attempt to inflict violence on them without any regard for their own life. It doesn't mean that person is mentally ill...at least in any capacity that would on any level explain away or excuse such behavior...so it's impertinent. For ex, this guy guaranteed was not in the middle of some psizophrenic episode where he thought the cop was a demon trying to destroy the world or some shit. Fucker may have been depressed, may have been bipolar, may have had who knows how many personality disorders....but none of that is relevant or pertinent ot harp on, not in place of the more obvious and likely, and simpler acknoledgment that the guy was a fucking criminal shitstain with no respect or regard for anybody.

Ooh your dick must have really gotten hard coming up with that one lol Seriously?? My comment warranted that response?? So basically Kevin Costlow, the "douchebag", must be your spirit animal. You must be very familiar with that kind of senseless rage obviously. oh and you dont scare me and I will continue to have my own opinion. Toodles sargeant psycho

You trying to top yourself now?

Did i not order you not to post stupid shit again? DO as you're fucking told by your superiors or get off the forum.

But it looks more complicated than that. In fact doesn't look at all like that. Unless his Linkedin page is a complete, 100% fabrication. Those kinds of jobs are not held by the kind of criminals who would throw themselves on a cop's gun wielding a piece of shitty old rotten wood (did you see what I did there).

Separate note:

According to Linkedin page he retired early, considering his age. Maybe that was when, if there was mental illness starting, it was getting under way.

This one has me curious as fuck because it is so wtf.

I don't know if anyone else recognized this, except maybe @Alf , but who here noticed the shirt he was wearing?

At 1:31 in the video he points his shirt out to the cop, then talks some shit and begins to beat the officer with his stick.

The shirt is an Army 160th SOAR t-shirt

Here is an Army write-up of the 160th SOAR

Basically, this is the Army version of what I did in the Navy for 20 years (with combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq).

If this guy actually was a pilot or aircrew of the 160th SOAR he would have been my Army analog and I think I know what he must of been going through outside of the service. And for whatever reason, he had enough of the shit. Maybe he had enough of being around fuckbags who only cared about themselves, or he had enough of the petty concerns that was filling his life, or he had enough of existing, but not truly feeling alive anymore (maybe all of these, because I have).

Unlike him, I've learned to deal with them, though it wasn't easy.

Kevin Costlow snapped. When he pointed to his shirt, he was telling the officer "I am dangerous and I am not afraid".
I knew I recognized that shirt! Someone I know was in the 160th! I hope he didn't have to serve along with this asshole!
That moron fucked around and found out! What the hell was he thinking? Maybe this was a suicide by cop?

Maybe I'm different than other diabetics but if I'm having a low sugar episode I don't have the energy within me to even drive a car, never mind the rest of what that man was doing. I get confused and can't even form a coherent thought . High sugar just gives a headache. So I don't really see this as a diabetic issue. Looks more like a psychotic break to me but what do I know, I don't even play a doctor on TV.

Plenty of educated/upstanding/middle-upper class older white men are scumbag criminals. Quite common actually for them to commit acts of violence.

Despite attempts to save his life, Kevin Costlow was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy was conducted on February 7, 2021 by Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Carol Allan, M.D. The autopsy revealed that Costlow suffered thirteen (13) gunshot wounds. Ten (10) of the wounds were located in the chest area and the remaining three (3) were located in the right arm. It should be noted the evidence shows that Deputy Pruitt fired twelve (12) shots at Costlow. However, the autopsy report does list one of the gunshot wounds as being “atypical.” Furthermore, the toxicology on Costlow came back negative for the presence of drugs or alcohol.

As part of their investigation, the police interviewed Kevin Costlow’s brother, Steve Costlow, as well as Kevin’s wife, Vera Costlow. Steve Costlow believed that Kevin had suffered a “psychotic break.” Steve said that Kevin has recently been involved in an automobile accident and was currently taking medication due to a previous neck injury. Steve explained that Vera had called him previously and said Kevin had been talking about “dark times” coming. Steve also indicated that Kevin recently made comments about picking up their mother, taking her to confession and indicating that mom would need to have her “last rites.” On the night before the incident, Vera came over to Steve’s house at around 2:00 a.m. Steve explained that he was in the basement when he heard on knock on the door. When he answered the door, he observed Vera and she looked “as white as a ghost.” Vera had told Steve that Kevin was home naked on the floor and screaming that he was Jesus and that “they are going to crucify me.” Vera further iterated that Kevin called Vera the devil and said he was hearing voices. Vera told Steve that she was afraid for her safety because of Kevin’s behavior.
Vera Costlow stated she had noticed Kevin was very upset recently and thought it was due to a recent car accident he had been involved in. She said Kevin began saying things that made no sense, like she was the devil and he was Jesus Christ. Vera believed her husband was truly a good person and she couldn’t believe this had happened. She felt her husband just needed help. She also confirmed that around midnight on February 6th, she went to the next- door neighbor’s house (Vernon and Mary Leopard) because of concerns she had with Kevin’s behavior.
Vernon and Mary Leopard were interviewed at approximately 12:10 p.m. on February 6th, 2021. During the interview, Vernon Leopard indicated that Vera Costlow came to their house knocking on their door at approximately 12:12 a.m. The Leopards’ Ring camera had captured the interaction on video. According to Vernon, Vera indicated that Kevin was “not right.” Vernon tried to convince Vera to call 911, but Vera did not wish to because she was afraid that police would break the door down. Vernon also indicated that Kevin Costlow came to his door at 12:23 a.m. Costlow can be seen and heard on the Ring camera video stating “stay there for a little while.” Costlow then left shortly thereafter. Vernon stated Vera was very frightened throughout the incident and when she came into the Leopards’ house, she crouched in the corner as if trying to hide. Vernon asked Vera if there were any firearms in the house to which Vera replied “no.” Vera just said that Kevin was “very confused” and “agitated.” Eventually, Vernon called for an Uber driver to take Vera to her brother-in-law’s (Steve Costlow) house.

So his cheese did slide off his cracker rather suddenly, it would appear. I wonder why, at his age? Poor guy, who had led a productive and admirable life up to that point. Poor wife, whose beloved husband suddenly descended into madness. What a tragedy.

@Morefiend's post did strongly imply he had recently started a new medication regimen. I wonder if there is a correlation between the two.

That seems plausible. My friend's father started a new medication, and went completely bonkers. They had to call police and an aid car, but he did survive. He stopped the new medication and the symptoms disappeared. Turns out it was a rare side effect.

Play stupid games, win copper jacketed stupid prizes dumbass. Never bring a stick to a gunfight, it will end very badly for you, as you unfortunately found out.

The police, like everyone else, have the right to defend themselves against serious bodily injury or death. The fact that they also carry tasers and sidearms should tell you something. Dumbass here was clearly the aggressor and assailant. Whether Costlow suffered a "psychotic break" or was on something that was not tested is totally irrelevant. His actions are all that matters here. I hardly think the deputy was thinking "he must be suffering a psychotic break, so I should just let him to continue to assault me and take it like a man". If he was aiming for "suicide by cop", well he achieved his goal. As Forrest Gump said "Mama always said 'stupid is as stupid does'".

I am sure the deputy felt very badly for having to shoot and kill him, but he did what he needed to do to protect him from being assaulted. He will no doubt carry this with him for the rest of his life.
