Nathan Phillips was enlisted under the name Nathaniel Richard Stanard.

“Nathaniel Phillips enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves on May 20th, 1972 and served until May 5th, 1976,” Don Shipley said as he read the DD-214 form.

“He served under just four years and was discharged at the exalted rank of ‘Private'” Shipley said sarcastically.

Shipley continued, “His entire military education was as a basic electrician in the Marine Corps — while he served in Lincoln, Nebraska, he served as a refer mach.”

Nathan Phillips went AWOL THREE TIMES while he was stationed at El Toro Marine Base in Southern California, according to his DD-214 form.

Video that emerged later shows the run-up to the incident as Israel called the students 'a bunch of f****ts made out of incest'.

The students tried to drown out his attacks with 'school spirit chants', but to no avail.

'They started doing their chants, so I was cutting into them,' Israel said. 'I called them dogs. They sounded like dogs.'

Israel said the Native American activists 'were trying to stop everything' and 'de-escalate the situation'.

'They actually interrupted what we was teaching,' he added.

'At the time, the kids took a position. They was all on one knee like the offensive line and the defensive line. And it looked like they was going to rush us and that’s when [Phillips] came.

'I wish he didn’t. We was still teaching. We had so much more to go.'

The 36-year-old said he's been a member of the House of Israel — often referred to as 'Black Israelites' — since his teens.

We can't change what happened in the past, so that past is the "argument" that is always brought up. What does any of that actually have to do with this. I'm not sure a MAGA hat is any worse than sagging pants, but it's the damned hat's fault and the boys who had the nerve to wear it. Where's the criticism of the black group who taunted all including the Native Americans by saying they deserved to have their land stolen because they weren't Christians. As for the MAGA hats, it's a symbol that seems to be open to loose interpretation and taken most seriously as a threat by Trump opposers. Really, it doesn't appear to be much of an argument but takes center place in any incident. Usually, the person wearing the hat is the one who is receiving ill treatment and criticism and whatever happens while they're wearing the hat is definitely all their fault. The power of the hat appears to be centered in the fantasies of those who can't stand the sight of it.

The video, taken from an Instagram account and reposted to Twitter, went viral with the caption, “This MAGA loser gleefully bothering a Native American protester at the Indigenous Peoples March.” In the clip, an activist named Nathan Phillips beat a drum as a teen in a Make America Great Again hat stood inches from him, smiling.

As the story picked up speed on social media, a Washington Post editor assigned reporters to cover it. At about 3 p.m. on Saturday, one reporter spoke to Phillips about what happened. Others called the Catholic school and the local diocese, looking for a statement from someone who could represent the students in the video.

The reporters weren’t aware of a critical third element in the scene: the Hebrew Israelites who had been taunting the high school boys moments before the viral video began.

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, still unaware of the moments preceding the viral video, The Post published its first story on what would become a days-long, national argument about racism, the media, and masculinity. The headline: “‘It was getting ugly’: Native American drummer speaks on his encounter with MAGA-hat-wearing teens.”

The article quoted Phillips, saying he felt threatened by the teens. It also included statement from the Catholic Diocese of Covington condemned the actions of the students seen in the video, in which they appeared to mock and taunt the Native American activist.

The smiling student, now identified as Nick Sandmann, released a statement 24 hour later saying that Phillips confronted him, not the other way around. Another video of the incident emerged showing Phillips slowly walking toward the teens, beating his drum.

In just a few hours on Saturday, the story took off with comet-like speed, propelled in equal measures by social-media outrage and by news reporting that drafted on its wake. In a now all-too-familiar process, people chose sides, and each side fed off the other, with mainstream news accounts pushing the whole slush pile along.

As is typical in such breaking-news situations, initial news accounts — which drew howls from partisans on both sides — were unable to provide all the context and facts.

It took close to 48 hours for reporters, and a divided America, to fully grasp what had occurred, and to whom. At that point, President Trump weighed in with a tweet supportive of the Covington schoolboys, kicking the dust cloud up anew.
