"It was reported that the baby choked while being fed a bottle," police said.

When officers got to the scene, they found an unresponsive baby girl. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition. She died on July 26.
Investigators say the 4-week-old child's father, 22-year-old Jonathan Enriquez, was alone with his daughter when she stopped breathing.

"They also discovered that the baby had other injuries in various stages of healing," police said.

During an interview with investigators, police say Enriquez admitted to hitting the child.

Enriquez was arrested and is accused of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Investigators later learned that Enriquez had texted the mother who had left for work, telling her she had to come home right away, saying the baby wasn’t breathing and he “messed up.”
At the hospital, doctors noted that he had a fractured skull, brain bleeding, and bruising around her eyes as well as a broken leg and rib bones, according to arresting documents. She remained for 15 days until she died on July 26.

Court paperwork noted that an autopsy revealed injuries that appeared to be the result of “slamming, crushing, or stomping,” and described the severity of many of those injuries as “catastrophic.”
On Wednesday, Mesa police interviewed Enriquez again, where he reportedly admitted to hitting the baby on the left side of her head because she had been “crying too much” while she was in her bassinette. During that interview, he allegedly also admitted to swaddling her to get her to stop crying.

"I'm gonna be honest, I love babies and I wouldn't do anything to harm them most of the time. But I just couldn't take all that noisy crying and stuff. I'm not equipped to handle that stuff all the time, you know? You think I have the patience of saints or something? How do you think I'll respond to a cryin' baby 'n stuff when I'm tryin' to concentrate on Minecraft and building a home with them blocks 'n' stuff, y'know? It's hard work buildin' a family."
