A Kansas man allegedly told police he randomly attacked a woman and her newborn child with a hammer in order to quell his “homicidal thoughts.”
Jason Eastburn, 43, armed with a hammer, allegedly told police he spotted a home that had a driveway that was packed with parked cars, and decided he would murder someone inside.
Eastburn knocked at the front door, and when a woman holding her 1-month-old baby answered, he started swinging the hammer. According to police, the woman was struck in the head repeatedly, and her head injuries required surgical staples to close.
The infant, thankfully, was unharmed in the attack, which took place at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Someone inside the home called 911 about a man who was “trying to kill them.”
Officers raced to the home and arrested Eastburn, who was sitting at a park across the street from the home — suffering from an injury to his forehead.
According to an arrest affidavit shared with Us Weekly, the woman said she thought the man was trying to sell something, and that when she opened the door, “the male smiled at her and told her, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ The male [then] pulled a hammer from behind his back with his right hand and pushed his way into the residence. The male struck her an unknown number of times with the hammer on the left side of her head.”
Eastburn was stopped by other people inside the residence, including a 76-year-old grandmother. The victim escaped with the baby as the others wrestled with Eastburn, who dropped the hammer and fled to the park.
It is unclear how Eastburn was injured, but police did take him to the hospital for treatment. In the ambulance ride there, Eastburn allegedly bragged to a female medic, “I killed a woman over there,” according to the affidavit. He later repeated that claim while being questioned by police.
“Jason told [an officer] he wanted to kill someone in a home with a lot of people in it, and believed this home matched his needs,” the affidavit reads.
Continue readingEastburn also explained to police the weapon he used to attack the woman had “sentimental” value, as the hammer once belonged to his late father.

Scary thing is that this man looks normal and would probably not raise any flags to most people.
