The court sentenced 22-year-old Rei Obara to two years in prison, suspended for three years, citing that she had "expressed her feelings for the baby and shown remorse,” TBS reported.
According to the court ruling, Obara, who worked at an adult entertainment establishment in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward, gave birth in the office at her workplace in March 2025. She said the baby wasn’t moving or crying and that she fainted.
Obara told police, “When I woke up, the baby was discolored. I couldn't leave it like that, so I decided to cut it into pieces."
The court heard that she dismembered the baby with a box cutter knife in her hotel room a few days later, and put the body parts in the freezer at her workplace because "I wanted to keep it close.”
Obara continued to work at the sex shop.
The incident came to light on Dec 6 last year when a male employee found the body parts while cleaning the freezer. The arms and legs were placed in food storage containers, and the head in a plastic bag.
Regarding the undiscovered torso, Obara said, "I threw it in the trash can in the waiting room."
The judge addressed Obara, saying, "In the future, I hope you will consult with your mother and your probation officer when you feel troubled.”
