A 15-year-old girl has been arrested following the death of her newborn son, who was found in a dumpster.

A woman approached police on a street in Philadelphia on Monday and said her daughter's friend had placed her baby boy in a dumpster.

The woman told officers that she had retrieved the baby from the dumpster and then notified the authorities.

The baby was taken to Temple University Hospital. It was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, according to WPVI.

Authorities found the teen, whose name has not been released, and her mother at her home, where they believe she gave birth.

The teen and her mother were first taken to the Special Victim's Unit.

Police are treating the death as a homicide.

The women and girls who kill or dump their baby in unauthorized location need to be made examples of so that it will be understood this behavior will not be tolerated.

if there are extenuating circumstances the mother should be given help but still be held accountable for her actions.
