Islamic Religious Leader In Texas Arrested On Charges Of Sex Crimes Against Children

"Mohamed Omar Ali, 59, has been charged with one count of sexual assault of a child and three counts of indecency with a child, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Ali, a Somali national who was living in the U.S. illegally, was a well-known imam in the Islamic community and taught through Texas and the U.S., according to the sheriff’s office.

Detective Michael Alexander said Ali gained access to the alleged victims by earning the trust of their families who invited him over to teach their children the Quran, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The sheriff’s office has accounted for four victims, who were all minors at the time of the assaults, which started in 2013.

Sheriff Troy Nehls has called Ali’s alleged crimes “sickening” and “an abuse of power.”"

Surveillance of Ali began in September of 2019, after victims reported the abuse to the FBI, but investigators believe the alleged crimes date back to 2013. Investigators said they believe there are many more victims who have not spoken up, and the sheriff’s office urges those victims to come forward.

The focus now, according to Nehls, is finding these potential victims, which can be a challenge due to some of the nuances of Muslim belief regarding sexual assault. Said Nehls, “You will hear that if a child in the Muslim community is assaulted in any way sexually, that child may be considered unclean, and will that child be able to get married in the future?”

Alexander stated that the stigma has already made the investigation difficult, and his office has not been able to move the investigation as quickly because of it.

Nehls added, “Put your religious affiliation away, folks, and do what's in the best interest of your child, and reach out to us.”

When it comes to sexual assault from "religious leaders" there is not much difference between the Catholic Church and Islam, probably more frequently in Islam since the stigma of being the victim is much greater, which lowers reporting of this criminal behavior.

An Islamic religious teacher convicted in Fort Bend County for sexually abusing three children has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Mohamed Omar Ali, 61, was found guilty by a jury in late October on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

The investigation into the abuse of children began in September 2019 after reports that he would meet victims through different mosques, offering to teach them the Quran. Prosecutors said in a statement they believed he abused victims through sexual contact beginning as far back as 2013.

Ali was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault conviction and 10 years for each indecency with a child through sexual contact conviction. The sentences were ordered to be served concurrently.
