Incompetent To Stand Trial: Arizonia Man Feels Unsafe, Fatally Stabs Teen Over Rap Music

Police say a man stabbed and killed a 17-year-old at a Circle K convenience store on the 4th of July.

According to the department’s Facebook post, 27-year-old Michael Adams walked into the store and stabbed the victim in the neck. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Adams was arrested not far from the scene.

KSAZ reports that Adams told officers that the victim was listening to rap music and “that type of music makes him feel unsafe because he’s been attacked in the past by people who listen to rap music.”

He said he believed the teen was going to attack him and wanted to prevent it by striking first, police said. Adams admits the two never spoke.

Adams’ attorney told the TV outlet that he suffers from mental illness and had been previously released from jail without medication. He said his client should be admitted to the hospital for treatment.

I don't see any evidence of "Racism" that's a pretty big word to go throwing around. The Victim has not been identified, though i know if the Victim had been black the Title would have been far different as simply stating 1 man kills another is not pushing the agenda correctly. If we are going at the argument that "Rap Music" Defines an entire "Race" let's not Forget Eminem appears to be doing better than most "Black" rap artists, and certain music can in fact trigger people like a bad acid trip (not to mention I hear shitty rap coming out of carrs driven by blacks, whites, mexicans etc.) I can't imagine Diane Downs kids get all perked up hearing Duran Duran.

Adams allegedly slit the boy’s throat and stabbed him with a pocketknife at a Peoria Circle K gas station.

Adams, whose criminal history includes theft, disorderly conduct, assault with a weapon and assault on a corrections officer, was released from prison on Tuesday. Adams’ attorney says that he had no access to mental health services after he was released although a statement from an Arizona Department of Corrections spokesperson says that Adams was “not designated seriously mentally ill.”

Michael Paul Adams is being held on a $1 million bond.

Considering that the man has a history of violence, apparently including at least one attack on prison staff, the department of corrections didn't look very closely. There's no way he went from paragon model inmate to murdering a stranger on a whim inside of a week.

I didn't mean to compare this guy to the Sacramento Vampire, or any of the other serial killers that weren't exactly all right in the head. There were warning signs though, and I feel like their actions may have been prevented ya know, to some extent. There's so many people suffering from mental illness and not enough help out there...or people that want to help, but I'd like to think that it's just there's so many people that want to help but can't.. A man accused of murdering a teenager in a Peoria convenience store has been found incompetent to stand trial, according to documents.

Last year, a grand jury indicted Michael Paul Adams, 28, on a first-degree murder charge in the July 4 killing of 17-year-old Elijah Al-Amin.

The defendant stated he felt threatened by the rap music Al-Amin was listening to.

The court recently found that Adams is unable to understand the nature of the court proceedings and/or is unable to help his counsel in the case and is therefore criminally incompetent, per Arizona state law.

The court ruled there is no clear and convincing evidence that Adams will not be restored to competency within 15 months, is incompetent to refuse treatment and should be subject to involuntary treatment per state law.

The defendant will be committed to the Maricopa County Correctional Health Services Restoration Competency Program to receive treatment necessary to restore his competency, according to court documents.

The state has been ordered to provide the necessary treatment and education to restore the defendant’s competency as quickly as possible and appoint a mental health expert to supervise the restoration treatment.

The appointed mental health expert will be expected to submit a written progress report by Feb. 27, or the date the mental health expert concludes either that competency has been restored or that there is no substantial probability the defendant will be restored by Oct. 7, 2021
