Where John Hallett was living when he was arrested for the murder of Paul Gonzales in 2017.

"A man who allegedly killed his roommate in a dispute over stolen mail, kept his body in the basement for 56 days and then hid it in pieces in trash cans around their Indiana city was captured six years later by police in Massachusetts last Thursday."

"John Hallett, now 54, stunned roommate Paul Gonzales with a crutch then choked him to death on Nov. 25, 2017 at their shared Michigan City apartment, per an arrest affidavit..."

"Both men were homeless in 2015 before they were placed in a home together on the 1000 block of West 9th Street by a local nonprofit — Hallett reportedly believed Gonzales "was stealing his mail… and trying to get him kicked out of the house," per the affidavit."

" A cadaver dog alerted police to possible human remains in the basement of the home, police said — decomposing matter found there was confirmed as human at a lab.

Michigan City Detective Lieutenant Anna Painter "worked quickly" to identify Gonzales as the victim and Hallett as the prime suspect in his murder, Massachusetts State Police said in a press release."

"John… moved Paul’s body into a bedroom for a few days but then moved him into the basement where he was kept for 56 days."

"John then used a hacksaw to cut up Paul’s body and place the parts into trash bags where he then disposed of them in the city residential trash cans.""

"Police determined that Hallett had moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, after an arrest warrant was issued on Aug. 8.

He was taken into custody at his apartment on Chester Street on Aug. 24 around 10:45 a.m."

Don't these place have supervisors to sort-of monitor the peoplThat, is a good question. e who live there? No one noticed or cared or questioned?

What I'm thinking, based on the description of Hollett and the housing situation is that they were "superusers".

"Typically, people experiencing chronic homelessness need a higher level of care because they have histories of severe mental illness, substance use, or physical disability. Studies have found that these “super-users” typically make up around 10% of the population of those experiencing homelessness and are the most expensive of all.

It’s more cost-effective to fund them and their partners than continue to have people in emergency rooms, jails and the shelter system.”"

Superusers tend to be THE most difficult people to deal with.
In Long Beach, CA, an organization that worked with the top 4% moved 3 into the 2 bedroom right next to me.
I'll just summarize and say they were dangerous, manipulative, aggressive, violent people and not typical of homeless people at all.

Anyway, the caseworker NEVER came to visit them once they'd moved them in. The mildest of the three, John, was terrorized out. He was a RSO (found out later. We received no info on what was moving in. Smh. The owner wanted to sell the property to the organization, so complaints were ignored.)

3 years later, an old neighbor told me that organization STILL thought he lived there.
Nobody wanted to deal with those nightmares, so they could have just killed him instead of shoving him onto the street, nobody demanded to see him.

It's enraging when the worst, the most noxious, get rewarded with housing.

But-I understand that the bottom line is to reduce the cost to the public.

That 10% cost as much as ALL the other 90%.

John Hollett might have been one of those? And Paul Gonzales had no friends or family? And Hollett used any benefits that he could from him? So it looked like he was alive?

Simple answer from experience. Usually, hell no. One has to be mean at Times in these places just to keep from being harassed. Sucks but it is reality. Ironically for me i lived well in a place like that for years. Hell, landlord even paid me to clean out the rooms and thank God I didn't have a room mate.

A man was sentenced to 56 years in prison Thursday for killing his roommate in Michigan City and then chopping him up.
John Hallett, 54, was found guilty last month after three hours of deliberations for murder and abuse of a corpse. Thursday, he received 55 years for the murder of his roommate Paul Gonzales. He received one additional year for abuse of a corpse.

Michigan City police received a call from Hallett on Aug. 29, 2022 stating that he murdered Gonzales.
Hallett told officers he struck Gonzalez, 64, with a crutch and choked him to death from behind because he claimed Gonzalez was stealing his mail.

Gonzalez’s body was kept in the basement for nearly two months. Hallett then explained to police he used a hacksaw to cut up his body, placed the parts into trash bags and then disposed the bags into a garbage can.

The earliest that he can be released is 02/09/2065.
