That type of living condition looks irredeemable and hopeless. I can understand convicted criminals having to experience hard knocks as a deserved consequence for their actions; but this looks so depressing, and I wonder if any human being would actually deserve this deplorable of a habitat or residence.
 
The feds should start by sentencing the jailers, county commisioners, and mayor to a 6 month respite in these facilities and make them repair or condemn the place after they've gone.

Then again sentence the jailers to 25 years in prison for neglect of a prisoner.

Who the hell sees this and can't wait to go to work the next day?

thats the environment he put himself into,because of his actions on the "outside". im sure this wasnt his first trip to jail. i have zero sympathy or empathy to the situation. he put himself there. did he deserve to die? idk. do i care. no. this has no bearing on me. just a burden.

I completely agree. Lost cause, deserves what he earned. Should he have died? Meh... Probably COVID. lol.
 
Lashawn Thompson was serving a 90 day for misdemeanor battery charge. He wasn't a murderous, child-abusing scumbag.
A bedbug infestation?
I think we all like the idea of dumping a ball of those creatures on top of some of the people we see here, but for a for a person in on a minor charge with his mental health issues going untreated?
If he'd lived, they would have returned a much worse person to the streets.
And that's not how it's supposed to work.

That's years, possibly decades, of filth, wear, and decay in that room.
It could never hope to be sanitary with all those exposed, porous surfaces.
Did he discard what look like empty condiment packages onto the floor? Probably.
Do we see a garbage receptacle in there for him to use? I don't.

He was found in that cell deceased, and covered in insects.

He was in for a Class C misdemeanor.

Examples of Class C misdemeanors:

Traffic Tickets
Public intoxication
Gambling
Breach of the Peace
Placing a firearm where a 13 yo might get to it.
Underage DUI

Why should you care?
Because there but for the grace of God go us, our family, and our friends.
It's not that there shouldn't be consequences for actions, not at all.
But the 8th amendment to the constitution and subsequent defining court cases say jailors have a legal duty to provide humane living conditions.


Everyone should care about constitutional rights, whether it effects them right this minute or not.
That concept is so fundamentally American, it's what makes this nation great.

there is amount of money they could pay me to work there... that place must be awful for health if that is the condition that is everywhere in that jail.... imagine being a guard thanks but no thanks it wouldn't be a job i would take,, i would rather flip burgers or serve coffee at least there it is clean(er)

Aren't there routine inspections?

Consistent, good management would have been keeping that place in shape.

It costs more money to play catch-up, treat prisoner's infectious diseases and settle lawsuits than diligent upkeep and exercising foresight all these years.

These photos aren't released to the general public, but they are described here by his family, so bear in mind this is second hand observations and non-expert conclusions of the photo..

Well, OBVIOUSLY. But you're dense if you can't acknowledge that there are some people taken to jail regardless of any clear evidence of guilt.

Sometimes it's just how the laws in the area work. Someone claims domestic violence for example, SOMEBODY is going to jail to separate them for the evening, regardless of whether there's any visible injury.

You can say, "Well then don't be in a relationship with someone who would make a false accusation like that against you"... but I'd wager that most the people that have had that happen to them never in a million years thought their partner would weaponize the idea of victimhood against them.

Sometime people get caught up in shitty circumstances beyond their control, and they shouldn't be subjected to such inhumane filthy conditions that they end up like this.

In theory, yeah, great advice.

In practice, people are arrested and held before trial for crimes they are found not guilty for.

Also, many laws, like Breach of Peace, can be broadly interpreted.

Most states have breach-of-the-peace laws that criminalize
-certain speech and conduct, including use of obscene or abusive language in a public place.
-engaging in noisy behaviors (such as firing guns or playing loud music in the late night or early morning),
-obstructing vehicular or pedestrian traffic, - fighting in a public place,
-resisting lawful arrest
-disrupting a lawful assembly or meeting.
-Some laws extend to vagrancy, loitering, and public intoxication.

Remember the dad who spoke up at the school board meeting and was arrested?

Ever paused your car to get the mail from your mailbox, blocking the sidewalk?

DUI can be one sip of one drink. Even a diabetic issue.

Someone may falsely accuse you of something, be it maliciously or mistakenly.

Political tides change.

Sheldon Thomas, Brian Banks, Melonie Ware, Jane Dorotik.

Obviously, people try to minimize these possibilities from happening, but they do happen.

So. About those jail conditions.
And #1 should be the only one anyone needs.

1. It's against our constitution.

2. It's more cost-effective to keep facilities maintained.

3. At the very least, those who find themselves there, thru no fault of their own, innocent, whether they be strangers or not, (or guilty) it is the civilized thing, for a civilized society to do.


If you still feel the same way, I respect that, and I do understand, it's tempting to see it that way.

Clayton County Atlanta Georgia

They are so backed up in Atlanta and surrounding counties that people are being held well past the date when something should have been done with their case, either dismissal, fine, bail, or being bound over for trial.

Tho Judge Alex is a hoot!

Lashawn Thompson, 35, died in September, three months after he was booked into the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. Public outrage over his death spread last month after a lawyer for his family, Michael Harper, released photos of Thompson's face and body covered in insects.

"Mr. Thompson was neglected to death," says the autopsy report written by Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., a former chief medical examiner in Washington, D.C., who is now a professor and chair of the pathology department at Howard University College of Medicine.

The independent autopsy report lists the cause of death as "Complications due to Severe Neglect," with "Untreated Decompensated Schizophrenia" identified as a contributing cause.

A combination of dehydration, rapid weight loss and malnutrition, complicated by untreated decompensated schizophrenia led to a fatal cardiac arrythmia, the report says. Because he did not receive necessary medical care or adequate food, water and shelter, his manner of death is homicide, Mitchell wrote.

Thompson had lost 32 pounds, or about 18% of his body weight, during his three months at the Fulton County Jail and showed evidence of dehydration, the report says. In addition to an "innumerable number of insects" all over his body, his hands, feet, fingernails and toenails were filthy, it says.

Medical records from the jail indicate that Thompson received his last dose of the medications he'd been prescribed for his mental health issues 32 days before his death, the report says.

Lashawn Thompson died in September after a three-month stay at the jail. He was arrested in June 2022 for simple battery, a misdemeanor.

Graphic images released after Thompson died showed his face, mouth and torso covered with insects.

An independent autopsy report noted that Thompson suffered from dehydration, malnutrition, and severe body insect infestation. The initial autopsy from the Fulton County Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as “undetermined.”

Attorney Michael Harper previously said Thompson was diagnosed with schizophrenia but was physically healthy when booked into jail.

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat previously responded to the claims. His office released another statement about the independent autopsy report:

“I have not had a chance to fully review the independent autopsy report. However, even before this report was issued it was painfully clear there were a number of failures that led to Mr. Thompson’s tragic death.

I was beginning to think that.
I'd guess, if nothing else, the inmates would be responsible for cleanup of their own cell, hallways, mess hall, visitation areas, exercise yard... Hell, the whole prison!

Empty mustard packets on the floor? Probably. Empty mustard packets aren't what killed him or attracted bed bugs?

Peeled linoleum, mold, insect infestation, rust, a decaying bed frame and support? ? He couldn't have possible caused that.

That takes time and neglect.
Not his fault, squarely on the shoulders of the people paid and given the funds to maintain those facilities.

The sheriff wanted new facilities. He didn't want to direct his employees to do work.

Lashawn Thompson's death rests right on his doorstep.

He went directly against the US Constitution.
 
They give giant pods one mop bucket to clean everyone's cell in like a 30 or so inmate pod. Every cell has a toilet, not everyone in their cell is the same level of clean, floors made of concrete. So gross. Inmates will whoop someone's ass for cleaning the toilet areas before everyone has a chance to clean their own "house". Big city jail is gross and the holding cells deep in the guts of Dallas county will look like this. So much traffic and you have so many pieces of shit mixed in with innocent, you try to clean it but You've got dope fiends and trustees doing this work and the cleaner is cut .. jail is gross dude and this is more common than everyone would like to admit.

If you're innocent and can't pay for a defense, your court date can't come fast enough. It's a nightmare - you gotta hit that phone like it's a PBS telethon and raise those funds to get out.

Actually they can’t arrest him unless they also incarcerate the USSS assigned to him

If convicted in any of the three criminal cases he is facing, Donald Trump may be able to influence whether he goes to prison and what his stay there looks like under a law that allows former U.S. presidents to keep Secret Service protection for life, some current and former U.S. officials said.
