MORELAND, ID — Police have arrested a man they say got upset with his ex-girlfriend and killed her horse by shooting it multiple times.
According to reports, 24-year-old Shawn Brayden Jones was allowing his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Mailee Cooper, to keep her 12-year-old horse on his property until she could relocate him.
On Feb 6, a drunk Jones shot the horse multiple times with a lever action 22 rifle moments after Cooper had left the property to get a trailer to transport the horse.
Jones reportedly told investigators that the horse was malnourished, had not been taken care of, and needed to be put down. Police said when they checked on the body, the horse looked as if it had been healthy and cared for.
Jones has been charged with felony malicious injury to property
Cooper left the following post on Facebook:
I never wanted to make this post anytime soon but here it is. The loss of my horse is a profound sorrow that weighs heavy on my heart. She wasn’t just my best friend she was my faithful companion and protector. The pain of her passing is intensified by the knowledge that she saved my life, bravely stepping in harm’s way and taking a bullet for me. Her selfless act of heroism is a testament to the deep bond we shared, a bond forged through countless hours of trust and companionship. Though she may no longer be by my side, her memory will forever gallop through the fields of my heart.
It’s a hard lesson learned, but I’ve come to realize that you can never change someone at the expense of your own well being. Trying to mold someone into who you want them to be, even if it’s for their own good, often ends up damaging your own sense of self. It’s essential to recognize that true change comes from within, and no amount of external influence can force someone to alter their fundamental nature. Instead, it’s crucial to focus on personal growth and surround yourself with individuals who uplift and support your journey, rather than ones who require constant transformation to fit your expectations.
Till we meet again my friend![]()
