A 6-year-old boy died as a result of a hit-and-run accident overnight, the Columbia Police Department.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Kayden Valdez died as a result of multiple trauma from the hit-and-run collision. The incident happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Columbia police said Valdez was walking alone along the westbound side of the road when he was struck by a vehicle that has been described as possibly being a dark sedan. After the collision, the driver left the scene, according to police.

The Columbia Police Department hasn’t determined how and why the child was alone on the roadway and whether surveillance video captured the incident, including the suspect’s vehicle.

The family of Kayden Valdez is speaking out after the six-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run.

According to his aunt, Ciara Valdez, Kayden was a loving little boy.

"He would just randomly tell you he loved you or randomly give you a hug and that let you know he really loved you and cared about you," said Valdez.

The boy was autistic and the family said he loved to run around.

Around 2:30 Sunday morning, Kayden and his mother Rubi were leaving a party on Percival Road when Kayden took off running, according to the family.

The family said by the time Rubi caught up to her son, it was too late. Police said Kayden was hit by a car that simply kept on going.

"This is a tragedy. Words can’t even express how we feel right now," said Valdez.

Kayden was rushed to the hospital where he later diedd.

"Rubi loved Kayden with her life," said Valdez. "I can't even imagine what she is going through right now being a mother myself. She is doing the best that she can."

Officers are hoping the driver will turn themselves in and are looking for any surveillance video from the crash site along Percival Road.
