A jealous boyfriend threw his girlfriend's cat down a garbage chute because he was jealous of the attention she gave it.

The 21-year-old Sydney man abused the cat named Hibala twice while the owner was away and the cat was in his care.

Hibala suffered severe injuries after he was thrown down a seven-storey garbage chute by the man.

The two-year-old Ragdoll cat was found stuck in the chute by his owner after she noted Hibala was missing.

The pet suffered a fractured tail, severe inflammation and open wounds exposing bone.

A vet removed two-thirds of Hibala's tail to keep him alive and he spent four days in hospital to recover.

'I have no idea what to say to a person who places a cat in a garbage chute,' a magistrate at Downing Centre Local Court said.

Hibala suffered further injuries in the man's care.

While the owner was overseas, she requested a picture of Hibala, and noticed a bump on the cat's nose.

Worried as to how Hibala received the bump, the owner asked the offender to take the cat to the vet. The man refused, but a friend of the owner took the cat to get checked out.

Hibala's injuries were again serious, with a vet finding fractured bones and severe wounds in his front left paw, as well as injuries to his eye, ear and nose.

Hibala had surgery to remove damaged tissue from his paw, spending another six days in the hospital.

The man was fined $6,000, and given a two year community corrections order with a three month period of intensive corrections ordered.

Hibala is now living with his owner in a new apartment without the man who abused him.
