A Harlem mom was fatally shot after she and her boyfriend confronted a man who had just groped her on the street, police said Monday as they pressed their search for the gunman.

Shadina Smith left her apartment on Jan. 16, then rushed back to tell her boyfriend that a man had grabbed her, authorities said.

The 26-year-old boyfriend and Smith, 29, went outside and confronted the groper, sparking an argument that led to gunfire.

The couple was caught in a hail of bullets inside the first-floor hallway of their apartment building, cops said.

The boyfriend was shot in the chest and left arm and Smith was struck three times in the chest.

Both were taken to Harlem Hospital, where Smith, the mother of a 1-year-old boy, died. Her boyfriend has since been released from the hospital.

Detectives found shell casings outside the building, leading them to believe that the gunman fired from outside the building. He has not been caught.

Moussa Cisse was arrested in October 2021 after spending 10 months on the run for the fatal shooting of Shadina Smith, a 29-year-old mother, in Harlem. [1, 2, 3, 4]

He subsequently faced legal proceedings for a string of violent crimes and financial fraud.

Gang and Bank Fraud Indictment: In October 2024, Cisse—identified as an associate of the "Shiesty 66" gang—was also indicted alongside multiple co-defendants by the Bronx District Attorney's office. He faced charges for his role in a massive $10 million check-washing, card-cracking, and bank fraud scheme that spanned the tri-state area and the West Coast.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that a Rikers Island inmate has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting four New York City Department of Correction Officers and attacking two fellow inmates. The sentence is to run concurrently with the defendant’s prison sentence on his underlying case.
District Attorney Clark said, “This defendant caused pain, bloodshed and chaos in Rikers Island with five violent incidents. He assaulted four Correction Officers, breaking one officer’s nose, and cut two inmates. These senseless attacks were completely unacceptable, and the defendant should serve a prison term for them. He should not escape punishment for jail violence committed while he is awaiting trial. “
District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Moussa Cisse, 22, was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for Attempted Murder in the second-degree and four counts of second-degree Assault by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Tara Collins. The defendant pleaded guilty to those charges on June 10, 2025. The Bronx District Attorney’s Office had recommended a 12-year prison sentence to run consecutively to Cisse’s sentence for a Manhattan case; instead, the judge sentenced him to concurrent time.
According to the investigation, the defendant participated in five violent attacks while incarcerated at the Robert N. Davoren Center, Rikers’ Island. On December 20, 2025, Cisse acting in concert with two other inmates, used sharp instruments on another inmate causing lacerations and bleeding to his face and neck. The incident was gang related.
On December 18, 2023, the defendant punched a Correction Officer about the face. A

fellow Officer came to his aid at which time Cisse punched him in the face. Both Officers suffered
substantial pain and swelling to their faces.
On January 24, 2023, the defendant acting in concert with another inmate cut a third inmate

in the torso with sharp objects, causing lacerations and bleeding.
On May 16, 2022, the defendant punched a Correction Officer causing substantial pain and

swelling to face in retaliation for being denied access to a restricted area.
On March 22, 2022 the defendant refused to be locked into his cell. A Correction Officer

attempted to talk the defendant into complying and the defendant punched the officer’s face several times causing a fracture to her nose.
