A 7-year-old girl died Saturday after being shot at a family Fourth of July party in Austin — the third weekend in a row in Chicago that’s seen a child under 10 among the city’s shooting victims.
The girl was playing on a sidewalk around 7 p.m. when three men got out of a white car and shot more than 20 times in the direction of the people holding the party, a group that the police said included many children.
She was visiting her grandmother’s house for the family party.
“There were kids riding by on bicycles . . . enjoying the Fourth of July, as they should have been,” said Fred Waller, the Chicago Police Department’s chief of operations.
The girl, identified by her family as Natalia Wallace, was shot in the forehead and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. An autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide.
A 32-year-old man also suffered a graze wound in the incident, police stated. That individual self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was reported to be in fair condition.
Police said they weren't sure who the target was in the shooting, adding that detectives are still investigating

‘For her life to be cut down for no reason, it’s ridiculous,’ the girl’s father Nathan Wallace said outside Stroger Hospital, where Natalia Wallace was pronounced dead.
First-degree murder charges were filed against a suspect in connection with the shooting death of a 7-year-old girl in Austin on Fourth of July.
Reginald Lamar Merrill, 33, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the death of Natalia Wallace, Chicago police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at a news conference.
Natalia was struck by a stray bullet while she was playing outside at a family Fourth of July party about 7 p.m. Chicago police said. Three men got out of a white car and shot more than 20 rounds in the direction of the people holding the party.
Detectives identified the vehicle through video, tracked it through the district, obtained a license plate and arrested Merrill, who was driving the car, around 9:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Pine Avenue, police said. Investigators believe the shooting may have been in retaliation for an earlier homicide.
Detectives are still looking for three other suspects in the incident, Deenihan said.
“Take some ownership in the decisions you made,” Deenihan said. “Come on in, turn yourselves in and admit that you killed a 7-year-old child.”
