A 16-year-old Detroit teen faces a murder charge related to the stabbing death of her newborn daughter in February on the city's east side, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday.

At 11:30 p.m. Feb. 21, medics were called to the 9100 block of Agnes to assist with an "unknown medical condition." That's north of East Jefferson and west of McClellan.

They transported the girl to a hospital.

Further investigation revealed that teen had given birth that day.

Authorities allege she gave birth in a toilet and stabbed the baby multiple times before wrapping her in a towel, placing her in a purse and hiding her body in a closet in her room.

Police found the baby's body the next day. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said the baby died of multiple wounds to the neck.

The teen has been charged with second-degree murder. Earlier information from the prosecutor's office said she was charged with first-degree murder as an adult-designated juvenile.

Detroit authorities have charged a teenage mother with stabbing her one-day-old baby to death and hiding its remains in her purse before storing it in a closet.

The 16-year-old mother was charged on Wednesday with second degree murder, eight months after the child's birth and death. She delivered the infant in a toilet on February 21, 2019.

Detroit police said that the mother covered the newborn with a towel before inflicting multiple stab wounds to its neck, placing its dead body in a purse and then moving it to her bedroom closet on February 21 2019.

The girl returned home and later collapsed, leading her mother to take her to the hospital. Once there, the girl is alleged to have recounted the story and police searched her property where they found the baby.

The cause and manner of death was listed as 'multiple incised wounds to the neck,' according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner.

A police report from February said that the baby had been stillborn though this has now been disproved by the medical examiner.

Authorities have said that she will be tried in juvenile court. Detroit courts can try adults as children but said that this was not an appropriate case.
