A Douglas County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Gabriel Scott Riley on charges of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, first-degree assault and first-degree arson, the District Attorney's Office announced today.

The 29-year-old Indio, Calif., man is accused of attacking his adoptive parents, Lindi and Craig Riley, while visiting their home just outside Sutherlin on March 10.

Lindi Riley, 57, was found dead inside a burned-out bedroom at the couple’s Rogers Court home, while her husband was rushed to the hospital with severe burns and a cut to his neck. Craig Riley, 56, remained hospitalized for several weeks before returning to Sutherlin.

The jury accused Gabriel Riley of three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder, two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree arson.

An aggravated murder conviction carries potential maximum penalties of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death sentence.

A future court date for Riley has yet to be scheduled. He has been held in the Douglas County Jail without bail since June 7, when he was transferred from Riverside, Calif.

He has been in custody since the day of the attack, when he was arrested after his commercial flight from Medford landed at the Palm Springs, Calif., airport.

Riley fought extradition out of California, which delayed his transfer to Oregon.

In addition to the charges stemming from the alleged March 10 attack on Craig Riley and the murder of Craig’s wife, Lindi Riley, Gabriel Riley now faces three counts of solicitation to commit aggravated murder and three counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder.

The new allegations came to light last month, when an inmate told his probation officer he had information to share about Riley. The inmate, Richard Dean Thacker, 33, reported that he had received around $15,000 from Riley while the two were previously in jail together.

“Thacker told me Gabriel Scott Riley wanted his dad killed because he was the only witness to the murder of Gabriel Scott Riley’s mother,â€￾ a detective wrote in the affidavit.

The investigation found that Gabriel Riley’s wife had been placing money into a bank account for Thacker’s mother, and that the money was then transferred to Thacker’s jail account. Thacker indicated that he never intended to kill Craig Riley, and was only trying to get money out of his fellow inmate.

During a hearing before Judge Ronald Poole, Gabriel “Gabe” Riley entered guilty pleas to one count of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder. He received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder charge and an additional 10-year sentence for the attempted murder conviction.

The agreement allowed Riley to avoid a potential death sentence if found guilty at trial of aggravated murder, Oregon's only capital crime.

Wesenberg said Riley will never be eligible for parole or early release of any kind.

“Gabriel Riley will die in prison,” said Wesenberg, who worked on the case with Senior Deputy District Attorney Deborah Stoll.

Wesenberg explained in court what transpired in the morning hours of March 10, 2008. Gabe Riley had traveled from his home in Southern California to Sutherlin that weekend to visit his father, a retired insurance agency owner who now runs a fishing lodge in Canada, and his mother, an adored counselor at Sutherlin Middle School.

The family spent the evening together, but that morning, Craig Riley awoke to find his son roaming the house, acting strangely.

Gabe Riley appeared to be leaving, and was talking on a cell phone. Craig Riley, 56 at the time, followed the man to the carport to check on him, Wesenberg said. That's when Gabe Riley attacked, coming up behind Craig and slashing his throat with a knife.

Prosecutors believe Gabe Riley then went inside, woke Lindi Riley, 57, at gunpoint, stuffed a sock in her mouth, then bound her nose and mouth with duct tape before setting the bedroom on fire.

The prosecutor said Riley then went back outside and found Craig Riley clinging to life, wrapped in a tarp. The defendant poured lighter fluid on the tarp and lit it on fire, Wesenberg said. As Gabe Riley fled the scene, Craig Riley managed to knock the flames out, make his way into the burning home and call 911.

By the time firefighters and police arrived, Gabe Riley was on his way to Medford, where he caught a commercial airline flight back to California. He was apprehended by police after the plane landed.

Craig Riley barely survived, and spent the next several weeks in the hospital.

“We believe that the motive in this particular crime was money,” Wesenberg said, explaining that the defendant stood to inherit the Rileys' estate.

The 13 other charges against Riley, including charges filed this year stemming from accusations he tried to hire a fellow jail inmate to finish off Craig Riley, were dropped in the plea agreement.

The agreement also stipulated that prosecutors would not seek charges against Riley's wife, Ester Riley, who investigators found had been transferring money to the inmate her husband had allegedly solicited in the murder-for-hire plot.

Wesenberg said at the press conference that subsequent investigation found Ester Riley, the mother of Gabe Riley's two young children, was ignorant to her husband's schemes, and that no charges would be filed. The inmate, who revealed the plan to police, also will not be charged.

Following the hearing, Craig Riley smiled as friends and family wrapped him in their arms.

Lindi Riley's sister, Pam Atchison of Roseburg, said her family is glad the process is over, and that a trial was avoided. Paul Glazner, pastor at the Rileys' church Sutherlin Family Church, said many prayed for such a resolution.

Craig Riley thanked investigators, including members of the Douglas County Major Crimes Team and prosecutors, for their work on the case. He said he plans to continue working at his fishing lodge, and is ready to move on.

“I'm looking forward to this being behind me,â€￾ he said, “and doing something I really love to do, and that's being on the water.â€￾

This is my brother he never got a trial so this whole article is bull..
He walked in on his adoptive mother (Craig never adopted my brother although they were married ) getting murdered by her husband and retaliated against Craig... Craig was a firefighter who was in with the judges and so on also he was to gain a life insurance policy if lindy were to die but these facts have never been released

Our mother Carole mensinger was also taken hostage by a serial killer John huber in front of him.... gabe walked in on lindy his adoptive mother being murdered by the husband Craig and the media changed the story to fit a narrative bc Craig was a good old boy in that community even tho he beat his wife and stood to gain life insurance..

So why did he run? Your brother was a pretty well liked guy, both of you were. Why didn’t he stay and fight for justice for Mrs Riley? This was a very sad day for our little town. Mrs Riley was a great woman that helped so many of the towns youth. While personally can’t picture Gabe doing this, his running makes it hard for me to believe he is innocent.
