A Florida elementary school teacher wants to press charges against one of her students.

She claims that the 9-year-old girl hit her, and the incident happened in the classroom.

That teacher has now filed a report with the sheriff's department.

The alleged victim teaches third grade at Woodward Avenue Elementary School in DeLand. She said the student hit her when the teacher told her to pick up a book that the student allegedly threw.

"There are no other professions that exist where it would be okay or acceptable to be hit by anyone," said Volusia United Educators president Elizabeth Albert.

Albert said more and more often, teachers trained to deliver academic content are being asked to deal with social and emotional needs.

"What we really need more of are the licensed, mental health specialists, professionals who can help the children and give them the support they really need," Albert said.

Officials said the teacher, in her first year with Volusia County schools, asked the student to pick up a text book the 9-year-old threw on the classroom floor. According to the report, the student, "refused and punched her (the teacher) in the right hand."

The teacher didn't need medical attention, but feels so strongly she's pressing charges.

"We should have folks looking at our kids who are in crisis and determining what interventions are going to make them successful," Albert said.

According to the teacher's union, there have been several instances this year alone in which teachers or staff members had to go to the hospital or urgent care for an injury allegedly made by a student, but that was not the case with this incident. The teacher did not need medical attention.

Unfortunately it has to start somewhere and in our society moms are getting younger and younger and completely abandoned by everyone in their lives the ill trained raising the half generations.. I see it every day.. we are asking professionals that their jobs are hard already pay sucks to step up the game and teach kids the things the parents should and play mental health professional with no training and then blame the ‘system’ for failing your child.. they will truly never grasp they’re the only ones who failed their children from day one

The ages of which women are giving birth is actually getting older (link). I agree with the second half, though. Our society has forgot that its the responsibility for parents to teach their children how to be a fucking adult. Its common for most people to blame schools nowadays when children don't know how to do something, when we should be blaming the parents, especially when it concerns being a damn grown up.

Childrearing has been reduced to benign neglect. Only the upper class and those on welfare are actually with their children, and those on welfare are often the products of neglect themselves. Then you have the families in the middle where both parents work and have nothing left to give at the end of the day. Once, the wages of a single individual could support a family, freeing their partner to parent.

Teachers aren't there to teach morals, ethics, courtesy, or self restraint. Children are not arriving into the school system ready to learn.
