An animal welfare group rescued a frail dog this week after he was “left to die” on the side of a road in Monmouth County.
Firefox was just three pounds when he was found in Marlboro on Tuesday, the Monmouth County SPCA said in a statement on Thursday. The breed of the dog and his healthy weight were unclear.
When he was found, Firefox was unable to walk and had a Body Condition Score of 1, the lowest possible score before death. His blood sugar level was also four times the normal limit.
“Firefox was discarded like trash, unable to walk and skeletal from starvation,” the Monmouth County SPCA said in a statement. “While law enforcement hunts for the person who did this, we are fighting to keep his tiny body strong.”
The pooch is still undergoing emergency care and around-the-clock monitoring as he is still struggling to walk on his own. The organization said his recovery journey will be long and costly and will include physical therapy to help him walk again and a specialized diet for weight gain.
