An argument at a private Halloween party early Sunday morning in East Palo Alto, California led to a shooting that left two people dead, authorities said.

Police responded to an activation of the Shot-Spotter system, which detects the sound of gunfire, and reports of a shooting around 2:44 a.m. on the 2500 block of Pulgas Avenue.

Four victims suffered gunshot wounds, and two were pronounced dead at the scene, according to East Palo Alto police.

One of the victims was identified as Eduardo Alvarado Sandoval, 22, of Stockton. The San Mateo County coroner had not identified the second victim as of Monday morning.

The other two victims were transported to a local hospital and were listed in critical condition.

No suspect has not been identified.

Officials said an argument at an adult Halloween party held outside a business complex escalated into a physical altercation, which then led to the shooting.

This is the first homicide in East Palo Alto since June 2016, authorities said.

The headline should say East Palo Alto, not Palo Alto. They are two separate towns in separate counties, even though they are next door to each other,
Also, E.P.A. has really cleaned up if it's the first killing since 2016. It used to be murder central in San Mateo County. The poorest and most violent community in the county. It's really gentrified in the last 15 years.

East Palo Alto police have identified Julian Rico Santana as the person who allegedly shot and killed two men during a Halloween party on Oct. 14, 2018.

Authorities are seeking the public's help in locating Santana for the deaths of Eduardo Alvarado Sandoval, a 22-year-old Stockton resident, and Mario Andres Vidalesmendez, 23, of East Palo Alto.

On Tuesday, the Police Department announced a $20,000 reward in partnership with Palo Alto-based nonprofit Mothers Against Murder for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect in the double homicide.

Santana, 20, of East Palo Alto, came uninvited to the party, which was held outside the rear of a business in the 2500 block of Pulgas Avenue near Bay Road, police said. He allegedly became involved in a dispute that incited a physical altercation and shot four people before he fled the scene, according to police.

Police received a ShotSpotter activation at about 2:44 a.m. and 911 calls reporting the shooting. Officers found four people with gunshot wounds. Sandoval and Vidalesmendez died at the scene and the other two were transported by emergency response crews to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries.
