An Escambia County teacher who allegedly abused a 7-year-old student turned himself in on Friday afternoon to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

Richard Jay Harris, 41, was arrested and charged with child abuse for causing once of his students to fall out of a chair and hit their head on the floor, according to the ECSO.

The ECSO announced Harris' alleged crime via social media.
An ECSO Facebook post stated that deputies "were made aware" of a possible child abuse case involving Harris and a 7-year-old student at Oakcrest Elementary School on Feb. 24.
"During the investigation, it was reported the teacher called the student to his desk and asked the student why she was so bad. The student told the teacher that she didn't know why," the post stated. "The teacher then told the student to go sit down and shut up 'you punk b***h.' The student then hit the teacher and returned to her desk."

After being struck, Harris walked over to the student's desk, leaned down and said, "now it's my turn," before picking up the chair that the student was sitting in and tilting the chair so that the student fell to the ground and hit their head, according to the ECSO.
Harris was suspended from his teaching job while authorities investigated the incident, according to Escambia County School District spokesman Cody Strother.
