Edgar Alejo Valdez, 29, has been charged with physical abuse of a child involving repeated acts that intentionally caused great bodily harm.
According to the criminal complaint, the case began December 8 when the child's mother brought her 14-month0old daughter to the hospital in Whitehall. X-rays revealed multiple fractures to both legs and both arms. The child was transferred to Mayo Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
The mother told police she left the child in Valdez's care that morning while she worked. When she returned home, she found the child crying and brought her to the hospital.
When police interviewed Valdez at the hospital, he initially provided what police claimed were inconsistent explanations for the child's injuries. He later admitted to hitting the child on multiple occasions, saying he "spanked" and "slapped" her when she was crying or not cooperating.
After being shown X-ray images of the broken bones, Valdez told police his actions could have caused the injuries and acknowledged that things had "got out of hand."
