A man tried to flush his baby down a toilet before getting into a standoff with police early Tuesday morning in Mount Washington, authorities said.

The incident began shortly after midnight when the baby's mother and father were arguing about child care inside a home on Southern Avenue. Police said the father threw the baby’s crib down the stairs and told family members he was going to kill them all.

Police said the father, who they identified as 31-year-old Dennis Gateley, pulled out a gun and held the 6-week-old baby's head in the toilet at least two times.

According to court papers obtained by Channel 11's Renee Kaminski, the family dog bit Gateley during a struggle between Gateley and several family members over the child.

The baby's mother told investigators that Gateley also hit the child's head on a wall.

The woman and the baby were able to escape from the home. The child was taken to the hospital. The woman suffered a black eye in the incident.

When Gateley would not leave the home, SWAT was called. About three hours later, officers were able to convince him to surrender.

“Which one of you were hiding behind the car? I could have picked either one of you off at any time,” Gateley allegedly said to police after he was taken into custody. “I had the advantage because I has the high ground.”

Gateley faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats and endangering the welfare of a child.

A spokesperson for the family told Kaminski that the baby has been released from the hospital and is back home.

Family members told police that Gateley and his girlfriend, Melinda Stracuzza, had been arguing Monday over whether Gateley should be taking better care of their baby, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

According to the criminal complaint, Gateley started punching and pushing Stracuzza during the feud. She and Gateley’s mother, Babette Stefanovitz, took the baby and ran into the bathroom. At this point Gateley pulled open the door, grabbed the infant, and proceeded to push its head against a wall before pushing the baby’s head into a toilet.

Friends and family members rushed upstairs after hearing a commotion, and saw Gateley pushing the child headfirst into the toilet.

A witness told police that she witnessed Gateley throwing a baby’s crib down the stairs after the family, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Before heading to the bedroom where he kept his guns, he pointed at them and said, “I’m going to kill them,” according to the witness.

When police responded to the incident, residents of the house said Gateley was inside and that he was armed.

According to a press release, “The male initially refused to come out of the house but Police Bureau negotiators successfully convinced him to surrender at approximately 2:41 a.m. The actor was taken into custody and transported to the Allegheny County Jail.”

Before heading to jail, authorities drove Gateley to a hospital where he was treated and released for a dog bite that occurred during the incident.

According to the Associated Press, Gateley was on probation for a simple assault conviction from last year.

In addition, Gateley is not legally allowed to own a firearm because he was convicted of a felony aggravated assault, in which he pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and trying to disarm an officer in 2009, online records show. He was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail and three years’ probation in that incident.

He has also been previously convicted of indecent deviate sexual intercourse and aggravated assault, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I believe this is the mother's FB. Poor little boy.

I would've loved to have seen the faces of the SWAT members as he bragged about his "higher ground" and the fact that he could've "taken them out at any moment".

Attempting to still look like Alpha dog when confronted with a team like that.

I hope their laughter and jokes were audible to the little man cuffed and shackled in the back of the paddy wagon. On his way to learn that he isn't top dog anymore.

And dogs are awesome, I love the protective nature of this pup. Their ability to recognize assholery is amazing, even when it's his "master". Give that dog a steak or 7.

arguing Monday over whether Gateley should be taking better care of their baby,

I think mama proved her point that he absolutely shouldn't be taking care of the baby. Showed them, didn't he? Sliced off his own nose to spite his face.
