U.S. stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked by an audience member during a live performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A male suspect on Tuesday evening jumped on stage and onto Chappelle as he was about to exit, police said. Security officers intervened at that time to detain the suspect.

The suspect, whose identification is currently being withheld, suffered "superficial injuries" while being detained. He has been taken to hospital for injuries and to be evaluated.

The LAPD said the man was armed with a replica gun that ejects a knife blade when discharged. It wasn't immediately clear what the suspect's motive was.

Chappelle, who was performing as part of the Netflix Is A Joke festival, was not injured in the attack, the LAPD said.

The Los Angeles Police Department early Wednesday confirmed the attack, saying the weapon the man was carrying can eject a knife blade "when you discharge it correctly." It is unclear if the fan made an attempt to use the weapon.

Several videos and accounts posted online showed the man climbing onto the front of the Hollywood Bowl stage and rushing toward Chappelle. At least one video showed the comedian falling to the floor, with several other people rushing to apprehend the person.

The attacker, a member of the audience at the show, was detained by the venue's security team and later taken to the hospital with "superficial injuries," the LAPD said. A video posted online of the alleged attacker appeared to be the unidentified man on a stretcher with his elbow bent at an odd angle.

Neither Chappelle nor any officer was injured, police said.

Jail records identified the attacker as Isaiah Lee, 23. He is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. Police said he will be charged with a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon.

Stern was referring to the viral incident in which Isaiah Lee, 23, tackled the “Half Baked” star while armed with a fake gun during the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. That's a tense situation, but also, in my opinion, turned out funnier in-the-moment than the Will Smith slapping incident. Why? For starters, a man bum-rushed the stage and attacked Dave Chappelle. The only person who got injured was the assailant himself. That, by itself, means that he got owned. But wait, there's more!

Security not only injured the assailant, but beat the crap out of him! And while he was being carted away in an ambulance, fans gathered around to boo and heckle him and give him a coward's farewell.

And, as these are comedians that got trifled with, they're not only going to take it very well, but will also have jokes for days about it. Chappelle, who says he personally "stomped" the guy a few backstage, referred to the assailant's hair as "spongy", among other things.

If that wasn't enough, though, Chris Rock was there. Because afterward, he was invited onto the stage and uttered into the microphone, "Was that Will Smith?" Perfect! Just perfect!

Isaiah Lee, 23, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, police said, after rushing the stage toward the end of Chappelle’s set in the last of a four-night stint at the outdoor amphitheater as part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival.

He was carrying a replica handgun with a large blade that folded out of it similar to a pocket knife, according to a photo released by police.


“After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors determined that while criminal conduct occurred, the evidence as presented did not constitute felony conduct,” the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said in a statement.

The case has been referred to the Los Angeles city attorney’s office, which prosecutes misdemeanors within the city. An email seeking comment from the office was not immediately returned.

Jail records showed Lee was still being held Thursday in lieu of $30,000 bail, Mendez said. It was not immediately known if he had retained a lawyer, and the motive for the attack was unclear.

While the man accused of charging at Dave Chappelle during a live performance Tuesday night appears to have escaped felony charges, Chappelle may be facing civil liabilities over his attacker’s injuries, a legal analyst said Thursday.

Chappelle was finishing up his Netflix is a Joke show at the Hollywood Bowl when 23-year-old Isaiah Lee allegedly ran on stage with a weapon and assaulted the controversial comedian.

Chappelle’s security team apparently tackled the attacker, who was later taken away from the venue on a stretcher with an apparent arm injury and bruises on his face.

“Believe it or not, Dave Chappelle and his team may be facing some civil liabilities when all of the dust settles,” legal analyst Alison Triessl told KTLA.

“If the threat was over and he was no longer a danger, and had been restrained, they can not take revenge on Mr. Lee,” Triessl said.

TMZ has released video where Chappelle can be heard talking about the attacker’s injuries and appears to be happy about the outcome.

“I felt good my friends broke his arm,” Chappelle is heard saying in the video.

Those words could cost Chappelle if a civil suit is filed.

“It is very possible that Dave Chappelle’s own words, where he says that he roughed the guy up, can be used against him in a potential civil manner down the line,” Triessl said.

The Hollywood Bowl may not be off the hook either.

Despite confiscating patrons’ cell phones ahead of the show, the security team somehow missed a replica gun that contained a knife blade.

“The Hollywood Bowl or the promoters involved in this show, including Netflix, may be facing civil liability for their lapse of security. Something went very wrong here,” Triessl said.

Felony charges will not be filed against Lee for the assault, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s office announced Thursday.

So I didnt have a chance to read the latest story above from @Turd Fergusen BUT - there are a shit ton of tic toks showing people going to the show or from people that went TO the show - evidently it is a highly guarded venu - you go through pat downs/metal detectors etc, some saying you were not even allowed to bring phones in or any recording devices unless you had media type passes etc... You can't see too much of the audience in the videos BUT - usually every damn person would have their camera out recording that happening and I dont see any??

SO I would not be at all surprised that this was staged... or "set-up" I guess I will say, as not too many people will agree to do something where they end up that fucked up - OR kid didnt realize how fucked up he would get??

Isaiah Lee, 23, appeared in a Los Angeles County courtroom, where Judge Armenui Ashvanian rejected his public defender’s bid for him to be released on his own recognizance and left his bail unchanged at $30,000.

Lee did not speak and sat next to his attorney, Chelsea Padilla, who told the judge her client was on track to receive housing, which he could lose if he remained in jail, she said.

Padilla also told Ashvanian the popularity of Lee’s alleged victim shouldn’t be a factor in her client’s right to be released since a protective order has already been placed on him regarding Chappelle.

“It would be a significant hardship placed on Mr. Lee if he’s not released,” Padilla said to the judge. “He does have ties to the community and at most we are asking for house arrest with an ankle monitor.”

“I identify as bisexual … and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering,” Lee told The New York Post. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”
