The incident started around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when three children, ages 4, 5, and 8, were found walking alone near Interstate 10.

The children told police that they thought "mommy was dead." When police arrived at the Antioch Village Apartments on Upland Road, they found the woman bleeding heavily in a bathtub with several puncture wounds to her legs and stomach.

EMS workers provided life-saving measures on the woman due to blood loss.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police are trying to figure out if these wounds were self-inflicted or if she was a victim of a violent crime.

Investigators were told that woman's boyfriend was at the apartment at some point during the event, but they've been unable to locate him.

If he was at the house during the event.. didn't call 911.. didn't make sure the kids were safe and provided for or have them with him and cannot be located now .. I would say it's probably safe to assume that the injuries aren't self inflicted.. just saying..

Police took the two youngest kids to a gas station across the street for snacks, while other officers drove to their apartment, with the 8-year-old riding along to give directions, SAPD said.

Officers at the scene said they are questioning an individual in connection with the stabbing but do not know who stabbed the woman or if the injuries were self-inflicted. Police also said the woman is being uncooperative.

The sergeant said officers found blood in every room, and the woman, 31, was located in a bathtub.

Based on the amount of blood in the home, officers initially expected to find someone dead.

Instead, the woman was able to talk to officers, although she did not tell them much about what happened, police said.
