Brianna Candelaria Charged With Murder, Child Neglect In 5MO Infant’s eath

Brianna Candelaria, 21, has been charged with second degree felony murder and felony child neglect in connection to to the death of a five-month-old boy, Virginia Beach police said.

Her arrest stems from a death investigation on July 29, 2024, when Virginia Beach Police responded to the 800 block of Crossing Court for a five-and-a-half-month-old boy, later identified as Valentino Lopez, with a medical emergency. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

In January, 10 On Your Side interviewed Candelaria’s friend, Tyajah Burnette, who detailed the incident.

“She told me that she was giving the baby a bath,” Burnette said. “She stepped out of the bathroom to get a towel, and when she came back, the baby was underneath the water and a rag was stuck in the drain. She ended up telling me that she forgot the baby was in the tub.”

Candelaria has now been charged with 2nd degree murder and two counts of child abuse/neglect. She is scheduled to stand trial in August.
