Raynell Reed, 31, and Gerard Winn, 52, were in court on Monday to face charges in connection with the death of their five-week-old baby girl.
Reed gave birth to the girl at home in Dorchester on Dec. 5, 2024, according to Hayden's office. Winn was the child's father.
The girl was approximately two months premature, failed to gain weight and was malnourished. Prosecutors said that Reed and Winn never sought any medical care for the infant.
On Jan. 9, Reed called 911 and reported the child was not breathing. She was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center, where her weight was measured at 2.5 pounds, Hayden's office said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the baby died from acute intoxication due to fentanyl and cocaine in a premature infant with malnourishment and sepsis, with toxicology confirming both substances in the infant’s blood, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors also alleged that Reed and Winn used illegal substances in the newborn’s presence, leading to the drug exposure, according to the announcement.
