An infant in Virginia was mauled to death by its parents' pet dog on Monday, local police said. The Hampton Police Division said in a statement the infant was killed in the early hours of the morning at a property in the first block of Scotland Road.

Officers were called to the scene shortly after 3:15 a.m. to reports that a dog had mauled a baby to death at the scene. Those attending found a "small infant that had sustained injuries consistent with a canine attack" at the property.

Personnel from the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue pronounced the baby dead at the scene. The infant's age was not disclosed.

Police said the infant had been sleeping in bed with its parents. The parents were then awoken by "a large amount of motion," at which point the father saw the injuries to the child.

Baby mauled to death

First thing I thought before even getting to the end of the post was I bet the baby wasn't in a crib or bassinet.. think of the high number of people who sleep with their infants.. then think of the ones that think the infants are safe sleeping with the family dog in bed or in the room with them as well.. my little dog gets upset when the grandkids cry and tries to protect the one crying from anyone and hates when the kids run.. I can only imagine a high strung or jilted large breed dog..

Quite possibly the baby had taken the dog's place in the bed, kicked the dog to the floor while the baby slept on the bed.

I don't get how people can sleep with a very small baby in bed with them, I stay awake afraid I might roll over on them and as a result every move they make I move away from them more and more. So before the night's over I'm hanging on the edge of the bed. But maybe that's just me.

Nightmarish
And 10O% preventable.

I will never believe that the dog didn't previously show signs of aggression.
Or maybe the parents were too stupid to notice.

My mom had a show dog and I saw something about it posturing and looks.

I told my mom "you better put that dog down, she is an accident waiting to happen."

My mom said "no way, she is so sweet."

Two months later she grabbed a kennelhand by the arm and would not let go. Shook him like mad in an attempt to rip his arm off. This wasn't a new person either he had been with her daily since birth."

I think people think those lip quivers and glares are isolated incidences. They are not. They are the warning signs leading up to a big event.

Always paying attention to your dogs body language. My Jake dog did not like my daughter when I brought her home from the hospital. I didn’t risk it. I sent him to stay with my ex. Once she was 6 months old he came back home, but they were never left alone together.

What breed of dog? Was the kennel person also worried about the dog's behavior? Did the dog ever go after your mother? Sometimes obliviousness deserves its reward.
